Hi everyone, I just bought my first Tacoma recebtly, I found a 2012 4x4 TRD off road and had to have it, as I've been looking at one for a while.

While I was test driving the sales rep told me the cold intake that was in it caused it to bog at higher rpms and that they would change it out with the stock air intake.

I had already planned on putting a k and n in whatever truck I bought so I talked the deal down 700 bucks to leave it with cai and whatever issues it had.

I was driving it for about 2 days then the cel came on throwing a maf code and noticed my mileage wasn't too great so I'm assuming the a/f is running too much fuel because of the cai

I bought maf cleaner and cleaned it, I've 're adjusted the filter to ensure its not too far on the tubing causing restriction. I've done just about everything to preserve the urd intake and prevent me from having to replace it.

I just wanted to throw this out here and see if anyone had any first had experience with this issue.

Here's some more info that might help the troubleshooting

It has the maf sensor extention made by urd
I use the injen water repellant sock
and I have an aftermarket rbp grille(that is about to be replaced with a raptor style)

so Idk what left to try, I've reset the computer and the light came back on after driving for about 15 miles. Could the computer still be trying to adjust the a/f accordingly? Please help me out , I'm still a n00b at being a Tacoma owner and doing my own maintainence, but I don't want to give up. Thanks in advance

I'm gonna grab my neighbors code reader later today and get the number again, I can't remember off the top of my head

You still have the stock oem intake? Try putting that back on and see if it will show the CEL during the long run. That way you can scratch the intake as a problem and look else where it might be the problem.

Unfortunately I don't have the stock intake, the urd cai was on it when I bought it, I adjusted the filter and have noticed the bogging has stopped but I still have the cel codes, I'll have the code numbers available in a few hours

x2 check that along with the harness extension. Depending on whether you have the plug n play harness or the cut/extend one.

Also try ditching that filter sock for a few days if the weather is nice. I recommend the splash shield myself and no filter sock (very restrictive)

It's the plug and play, hopefully I actually get a day off Sunday to mess with it, I've been everyday since I bought the truck so all my attempts to troubleshoot have been rushed. I'm gonna drive to work tonight with the sock off and try it, if I can clear the code the first thing I'm doing is buying the splash shield for it

The 174 code is pending, so its not turning on the light. Already mentioned to check the maf seal, could also be the sensor itself. I also assume that you have checked all the tubing seals.

Code came back on my way home from work, gonna try and borrow the neighbors code reader again. How long does the a/f take to adjust to the higher flow coming from the cai?

The CAI is worthless IMO on a Tacoma. Take the 700 dollars you saved on the deal and plut the intake back to stock. You should have taken the dealer up on this when he offered as it would then be his problem. Now it is on you as you bought it knowing that it had an issue with the CAI.

Does it have the urd maf calibrator installed by chance?

Also forgot to mention to check the vaccum line that runs off the intake towards the back of the engine.

Other than that I'm out of ideas for you to check. I've had mine for over a year with no issues. There has to be something were missing..

I have the URD TCAI and my Tacoma doesn’t throw any codes..Have you checked the lines and MAF sensor harness? An unplugged vacuum line would cause a lean out code.

If you don't have the urd calibration unit I know it can cause the cel to come on.

"To extract the maximum benefit from the URD TCAI we recommend installation of our MAF Sensor Calibration Unit. This unit will electronically optimize fuel mixture for the greatest performance benefit. When you purchase the URD MAF Sensor Calibrator with the URD TCAI a special map will be preloaded into the Calibrator optimized for an otherwise stock vehicle. The Calibrator is end user tunable to compensate for other performance modifications you may have or may install in the future. " urd website

Send me a picture of your intake, I'd like to take a look at it. Would you want to trade for a stock intake, If I can find my mine?
