As my first real "performance" mod on my truck, I tried to find some good reviews and installation write up and/or pics to help me in the decision of buying or not a short throw shifter for my little 4 banger. I was looking at Hurst short shifters and URD. Hurst has a really nice shift stick that come with the kit but the price didn't justify the purchase for me so I went with the URD. (btw, I don't regret).

Because my truck is my daily driver, I wanted to do the things right and didn't want to miss a part in the installation that could cause my truck to break down on my way to work. I follow the installation instructions carrefully but there was a small problem with it. On the package, URD are referring to PRE05 installation guide for the 2.7, as you can see on the bag.

I wrote to the support to be sure they sent me the right part before starting to take things apart. They then refer me to the installation guide for the 6 speed, on this link : http://gadgetonline.com/shifter.pdf

The guide was really helpful but there is not a lot of picture to help with the text description. I decided to make a short "complement" write up for those who are on the edge of buying this kind of Short Shift.

    So let it begin!

Step 1: First thing to do is to remove the center console and the plastic cover that wrap the shifter. I didn't take a pic of this step because I was trying to be concentrated on what I was doing and I also think that removing those plastic piece is a basic thing to know.

Step 2: Remove the rubber boot on the base of the shifter. There are two plastic clip that we have to push in the center before trying to pull it out. There is also two phillips head screw to remove.

    Step 3:
As we can see, the two front bolt doesn't align very well with the acess hole on the floor. There are two options, use a joint on your ratchet or do this

I cut the side and lift the piece of metal sheet to have it out of the way. Now we can remove all 4 bolts. The URD guide suggest to use a rubber mallet of an hammer with a piece of wood to hit the side of the tower portion. Once it breaks loose, take it out of the transmission and bring it to a place where it is comfortable to work.

Step 4: Remove the small plastic piece on the end of the ball. It is pretty hard to take it out but I did it with my hands only. Don't be surprise, it will pop out with speed! don't lose it and don't break it because it is going on the new ball to install.

Step 5: When the platic piece is out, install the two shims on the stock ball

and then, slip the new ball on the stock one. Push it until it clics in place.

Step 6: The guide highly recommend to put red locktite on the setscrew on the new ball. In my case, I put blue locktite because I am scared of red locktite on small parts like this that I would maybe, oneday, want to remove it.

Step 7: Put some gasket maker on both side of the spacer and install back the shift stick with the new ball on it. Bolt it in place with the 4 new longer bolt that are in the package. Tighten it at 13lbs and it's done!

Shifter now sits an inch higher, wich in my case make it more comfortable.

Thanks @Gadget@URD for the quality product! just miss the URD sticker that wasn't in the box lol

As this is my first ever write up, comments are welcome!

I couldn't be happier of the final result! The best part is going from 1st to 2nd. It is much quicker. It makes city driving much better!

No it doesn't lol I had it before but for now I put back the stock one because the browning was becoming loose. I have to find a way to make it more tight on the stick. The driving experience with the stock one stays awesome tho!

Only thing I did different was put the metal gasket on top vice bottom of the billet spacer

I wanted the core/hurst first, mostly for the modified shift stick lol but couldn't justify the price, which is more when converted to canadian dollars lol

Now just looked at the link @05Taco4x4 shared, and noticed that the price increased. I paid 110$ us back in 2016, now it is 150$. At that price I think I would have buy the core/hurst lol

    Just FYI,
You can break red loctite with heat, if you ever need to. More than likely the blue loctite will be enough, but if it fails, these metal parts can fall into the transmission. That will not be a good day! RED loctite is the correct thread locker to use for this, and make sure the parts are cleaned with brake cleaner to ensure the full bond. My URD kit has about 150,000 miles on it now, and it is still secure. Below is a link to the removal of RED Loctite:

I learned that a little after I installed it. I also think blue does the trick, and its been 75k miles now since I have it and no issues. Thanks for the link tho! Maybe someday i'll swap blue for red for peace of mind

    Sorry for delay

went urd because it reduces the throw more than TRD. No expert but it should be close to the same installation. Been close to 5 years now and urd still rocking gears great!
