So. I'm broke down in Pinedale wyoming right now, my drivers side front dif seal went. In the am I'm going to tear it apart in the napa parking lot . but the nearest toyota dealer is Idaho Falls, now my plan is to take the cv out, Take it apart and put the bearing side back through so I can keep my bearings on track and seal off the diff withthe bottom off the coffee tin and some rtv or whatever I can find at Napa that will work best. I have no problem doing this I have the tools and I've taken enough cv's out and apart. My question for you wise people is, will running without one cv in hurt my diff? Do they both have to be in to keep the diff going the same both sides? Or will having one in and one not in the other diff side be fine? I live in northern alberta. So I have 1300 miles to home, and I am set on hitting yellowstone which was my destination. My seal is completly shot and the cv has too much wiggle room now on the diff side for me to be comfortable trying to keep oil in the diff and roll with a sloppy cv in the diff. I lost the seal 20 miles south of pinedale, just got done some wheeling through moab. If anyone with the answer to my question could get back to me ASAP it'd be much appreciated! Thanks!

Im sure someone nearby can help out. It almost sounds like you are better off overnighting a seal and doing the repair the right way.

@Tappercool You know there's always play in the cv's going into the front diff, unless in in 4wd, right?

    Good luck with repair.

Damn good luck bro! Nothing like working on the car in the parts store parking lot. The good news is that there are usually tons of people around willing to help out. I always try to help the guys working on their cars in the parking lot if it looks like they need it.

Hey OP, i'm in the process of gathering parts to replace my front driveshaft on my 2004 4runner. I believe a Timken or National p/n 224820 could work for you. I am not 100% sure. When I was chasing the part number. It showed compatibility with some Chevy vehicles. So, if there is a Chevy dealership available try them. That is if Napa auto parts isn't carrying it. I hope this helps.

Tore it apart this morning. Bearing is in pieces inside. Not the seal. Not sure if that's better or worse. Off to the next step

There is a Toyota dealer here in lander. 2 1/2 hrs from you. Just on the other side of the Mt. Let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do.

Also I have a 97 that can be used for parts. Not sure what year you have

I got it patched up. It was the bearing not the seal. Silicone bottle in the seal. Silicone around it. Then the bottom of a soup can. Silicone around it. Then duct tape layers. Then the bottom of a green propane bottle over top hose clamp to the diff. Took apart my cv snd put back through wheel bearing to hold together. Not bad for a parking lot fix. Thanks everyone for your help and consideration. Off to yellowstone!
