Basically all that stuff is what I was hired to do, but almost never get to do. It’s all easy stuff and I enjoy doing it. I live 3 minutes away, so it’s really no sweat.

What I have been doing 95% of the time is bitch work that nobody else wants to. I’m done with that.

Buddy worked for a fab company as a welder. He was the top welder there, unfortunately the only level above his were the owners so there was no room to grow. Owners wanted him to work more for same pay. He quit and moved on to something better, it happens.

Sounds like you need to title yourself a consultant and then charge a pittance for your work.

Contracts for outside services are a lot easier for both sides (legally speaking) when there is "consideration" aka we both get something out of a transaction.

I hate bitch work as well, but that sounds like a lot of pro bono work. I'm just an internet stranger with an uninvested viewpoint though.

Good letter, but honestly. Never do anything for free. Makes you seem unprofessional and apologetic for no reason. Offer those same services on a Per Diem basis. I was just let go from my job for a total miscommunication, which I was not even present or on site for, yet the company is still attempting to stand their ground. I'm honestly not too concerned, just came at a very bad time.

Do yourself a solid, and do nothing for free.

An interesting letter, not sure if your circumstances with this business. If I was the shop owner, I would thank you but not let you step foot in the building to do any volunteer work. Bad situation happens (injury, accident, etc) and the friendliness goes away real fast. If still interested in providing those options, offer as a contractor at crazy prices like $0.01. Just so you and the business are legally covered with insurance and what not.

There’s an old saying from the hippie days “gas, ass, or grass, nobody rides for free “. Sorry but I’m just not nice enough to work for free!

He kinda helped me during the early days of KB Voodoo Fab, so I kinda owe him. It’s a small company and he has three kids. I’m happy to help and it’ll help me stay busy.

Without knowing your exact relationship with your employer (my guess is they are family/friends considering all the free services you are offering to keep giving them, but that's none of my business... sips tea), I'd suggest just something very short and don't include any promises that could come back to haunt you as you're moving on... it's not on you to let them down gently.

This letter is to inform you that I am resigning from my position as Operations Manager of xxxxxxxxx, effective January 19, 2018.

    Sincerely,
    You

It's to be just something for their files. But talk to them about being a resource as they transition to you not being there, maybe even draw up an offer letter for contracting services over the weekend.

If you feel you owe him for helping you start, then maybe for your mental well being you can give him the standard 2-weeks notice. If he was helping you with KB voodoo get up and running, he probably knew this day was coming.

I already handed it in. He was visibly upset.

This is a small town and finding a replacement is going to be damn near impossible. I don’t mind helping him out at all. Karma goes a long way.

That surprises me he didn't see that KB Voodoo was going to be your out, but I'm probably biased seeing all the success you seem to be having through the TW lens.

I get trying to appease the karma gods. Good luck, but seriously consider getting an on-call or contract for work there, as it'll protect both of you if for some weird reason shit gets weird.

Exactly. It’s not only about protecting your relationship, but also protecting any insurance that might need to be paid. He should be open to this as well. Protects everybody.

I told him a few months ago that I wanted to go part time, but a few things happened this week that made me decide to do a clean break.

    Always in process
putting things you'll "do for free" in to writing is scary... I personally would have worded it to leave a door open for a nominal consulting fee.

I have continued to work for free for a small family business after I left employment there after 10 years. It's tough to walk away from something you helped build so I get it. Also put in huge amounts of time working for a close friend as he was getting is auto repair business off the ground and never had an expectation of being compensated.

The point is I just try to cover my ass on any document that can be referenced 5, 10, 15 years down the line

Congrats on taking your next step and more awesome KBVoodoo products :p

It seems like you want to help them survive without you. That's the end goal imo. I have a feeling you're going to get super busy with your own ventures and eventually won't have time for a lot of unpaid work.
