Are these Taco's armor-plated is some way? As much as I love my truck, it is NOT something I would want to be driving into a hostile zone.

I believe the Tacoma's were mostly un-armored and mostly unmodified. Weren't exactly for driving into combat, mostly for mobility and fitting in with the local's (sure, Tacoma's weren't exactly "fitting in" but much better than the heavy, loud, and road bound up-armored Humvees). That said, Im sure each unit had their own unique modifications.

 Great article and I did chuckle at the squeaky leaf springs comment because mine squeak like crazy. However, I was not distracted from the OC due to the fact the article is the first post. Good find OP.

That must really add to the pucker factor with all the IEDs.

Not really. You would generally try to stay low key and don't drive predictable routs. Besides most missions were via air insertions. Tacoma's were generally low key mobility as needed. Def not assault vehicles if it can be avoided.

But yeah, a Tacoma would be shredded.

IEDs were for convoys; predictable. You basic grunts (infantry) and supply convoys were prime IED targets.

My friend that's in the AF said they had a armored corolla on the base. He said it was the scariest thing to drive, heavy ass armor and no breaks. I think in the book gunship ace Neal Ellis talked about driving around in a loaded down corolla as well with SF contractors.

I've read back in the early 2000's Army special forces did by Tacoma 4x4 double cabs either the SR5 or TRD then modding them to suit their needs. They used Tacoma over the Hilux because the Tacoma was more comfortable interior(meaning more interior space) and they wanted a gasoline engine. As has already been stated they used them in more low profile situations in which case they blend well. Another reason for going Tacoma was that the vechiles could be procured "privately" and in the US.

On a side note I wonder how many future squirter owned Hiluxs Apaches and A-10s have blown to bits?

I love the language in the article. Written by a bad ass who holds no punches like the freakin' ballsy bad asses he's writing about.

I don't give a flying fuck what they drive. I'm just glad that these fearless and ballsy guys are on our side.

    Booyah!
