Anyone ever had issues with car play using USB to connect? Mine is working intermittently for some reason or another. Also xm is still on and I already said no thanks to a customer service representative. I can still play my Apple Music no problem but can’t get my map up. Those eight push tiles aren’t there either . Phone what’s playing now and so on ….

I know that sometimes when I plug my iPhone in it vibrates and shows it charging. But not all the time. Charging port in storage compartment seems to be working fine.

Sorry, can't comment specifically on car play / Apple and such. I use a giant USB stick for music... just cuz that's the way I roll. Don't judge lol. But I wanted to suggest a long shot something from my experience.

I discovered along the way that I cannot do proper searches through the file folder ('album') listings once the vehicle is taken out of park to drive. Hitting SEARCH and then FOLDER will only jump to a fixed random spot, and my individual track listing for one album is grayed out. The most I can do is jump one album forward or back at a time. Once back in park / vehicle off ACC mode I can then search properly for the folder I want. Something like vehicle in motion safety "feature" BS, which also excludes a passenger from using it.

I say this scenario to you to suggest maybe see if there is a pattern to when you plug in / disconnect / start your music, compared to when you are in drive, parked, etc. It probably isn't your issue, but at least seeing if things change or not may help narrow things down. The head unit software may be wonky? Others probably would have seen this before now, but who knows.

    Good luck

you could try a new cable. i've been through multiple cables (including those issued directly by the Mothership) and they all seem somewhat susceptible to partial disconnect or failure to fully connect if they aren't seated just so, if they get bumped, etc. but some cables seem to do better than others.

it is particularly annoying when you plug in the phone and hear the chime and see the lightning bolt icon, so you know there's enough connection to provide power, but you still can't get data. i have frequently wondered if the USB A socket in the dash could be improved upon.

Apple car play is hit and miss for me. I've tried different cables all with the same results. The lag is terrible.
The only thing that works every time for me is with the truck running, i start playing a song on apple music and then connect the Usb cable to my phone. The truck treats it as an external USB device for music.

Be sure to update your phone. This solved a connectivity issue for me a few months ago.

Similar issues here with the 23 taco and the 20 4Runner. It seems to randomly connect on and off after a new setting is used on the phone. For example, spotify will not reconnect after a phone call and then other times it will. Sometimes a song will play but not through the speakers. We both started noticing it 2 or 3 weeks ago. Seems to be getting worse. Any insight is appreciated.

I've used CarPlay every day for almost 4 years and never had an issue. I do usually keep my phone on the latest iOS and always use an Apple charging cable though so that may be a factor.

Just did some research, nothing seems to be 100%, but here is a list of partial fixes from other threads:

1.) Apple cord – shorter one may help

2.) Soft reboot of the head unit - hold down the volume button til the screen goes black and then it'll reset.

    3.) Initiate a phone call,

4.) I've found that if I let the computer/infotainment initialize (i.e. go through the warning splash screen and get to the main infotainment screen) before I plug in my phone, it works fine and there's no stutter.

5.) Go into the headunit settings, turn off automatic updates, turn off wifi, and any other settings you don't need.

6.) have the phone unlocked before connecting to USB.

    7.) Dealer change head unit?

8.) latest IOS update on phone?

9.) plugging in phone in prior to starting the car.

Sounds like their isn't enough memory in the head unit. Toyota should know better as this is a selling point for their vehicles.

I had a problem like this and it turned out that the phone needed the passcode to connect sporadically. I now just connect my phone and use face recognition to have it open before I start the truck and I don't have issues any longer.

I've had a lot of similar issues running android. I've tried new cables, different phones, all the troubleshootingi could find...

The head unit just randomly stutters when playing audio through projection mode. After sending enough clips of the GPS cutting out ( making it unsafe) the dealer has agreed to replace the head unit. hopefully that is the fix

I can't speak on CarPlay, but the connection is spotty using the USB port on the dash for me. The charging port in the armrest storage has no issues.

Mine hasn't worked since about 2018. I just use the bluetooth. Matter of fact, when I got the tune the tech said he updated the ECU? I'll give it a try in a bit.

    CarPlay works great for me.

buuuut the usb port my cables plug into is crap. It seems loose and if I were to juggle the cable it disconnects.
I tried a buuunch of cables. They all work until I bump or wiggle the connector at the plug in.
