I have a 2019 SR. There is one USB port built into the dash next to the cigarette lighter. If I plug my phone into that USB port, it won't charge my phone. My phone indicates it is charging, but the battery percentage just goes down more slowly.

If I plug my phone into either of the USB ports that are in the center console, my phone charges just fine.

From what I've read online, the dash port isn't intended to be used as a charging port, but for data transfer instead. I want my phone to be able to charge or at least hold a charge while I'm using it as a GPS on long road trips, and I want to use the port in the dash since it is more easily accessible / closer to where the phone is located when in use.

I've tried using a charging only cable, but that made no difference.

I assume the port isn't getting enough power (current) to charge the phone. Has anyone changed their in dash USB port so it charges a phone?

That port only kicks out enough power to run a USB drive to play MP3s and such.

You can add in keyed or non-keyed power to an available spot pretty easily. Keyed, you can tap the existing power port. Non-keyed, you can tap the power coming into the trailer brake connector behind the driver side kick panel.

This or similar will do the trick:
