I started using the USB jack with a 64GB thumb drive so that I could take my library with me on the go. At first glance everything looks to work correctly with all of the folders showing and playback working flawlessly.

After digging in and looking through certain albums I noticed some discrepancies I cannot explain.

All of my folders show up, but upon opening, some of them will not read the contents. The files are fine when I pull them up on a computer, and I have compared ones which work with ones which do not work and I do not see any obvious differences.

The files are affected for an entire album (so one album will work while another will not). It makes me think it is how they are ripped, but I do almost all of my music the same. I buy a CD, rip the audio through Windows Media Player into a WMA file with no protection, and store it on a external hard drive.

I'm guessing there is an incompatibility between the file and the Tacoma.

I think you have to convert it to MP3

The first thing I would check is the sampling frequency and bitrate of the files. If the files weren't all ripped at the same time, there could have been differences in the settings. I would also think that ripping with "variable bitrate" could be problematic for the Tacoma's audio player. But, as you noted, your computer is able to play any of the files because it can read a wider variety of file settings.

Here is the file compatibility info:

    ●MP3 file compatibility

    • Compatible standards MP3 (MPEG1 AUDIO LAYER3, MPEG2 AUDIO LAYER3)

    • Compatible sampling frequencies

    MPEG1 AUDIO LAYER3: 32, 44.1, 48 (kHz)

    MPEG2 AUDIO LAYER3: 16, 22.05, 24 (kHz)

    • Compatible bit rates (compatible with VBR)

    MPEG1 AUDIO LAYER3: 32-320 (kbps)

    MPEG2 AUDIO LAYER3: 8-160 (kbps)

    • Compatible channel modes: stereo, joint stereo, dual channel and monaural

    ●WMA file compatibility

    • Compatible standards

    WMA Ver. 7, 8, 9

    • Compatible sampling frequencies

    HIGH PROFILE 32, 44.1, 48 (kHz)

    • Compatible bit rates

    HIGH PROFILE 48-320 (kbps, VBR)

    ●AAC file compatibility

    • Compatible standards

    MPEG4/AAC-LC

    • Compatible sampling frequencies

    11.025/12/16/22.05/24/32/44.1/48 (kHz)

    • Compatible bit rates

    16-320 (kbps)

    • Compatible channel modes: 1 ch and 2 ch

The Entune unit will only read 9,999 separate files or songs.

All good responses, and I appreciate it.

I don't think I have surpassed the song limit, but I will double check. The files all show in the folders, but when selected go to playing screen without any descriptions.

Converting the files to mp3 seems like a bit of a hassle, but I've done it before for old cell phones, compatibility issues, etc.

I think you are right with the bitrate of the files and I will need to check that with files that are not working. The files were ripped using different computers across the years, and it seems like some of my newer albums are the ones which do not play. It looks like I may be using a variable bitrate as you suggested. Thank you for the breakdown of compatibility info; that should help troubleshoot.

I hooked-up my 164GB (10,000+Lossless file songs) old iPod via the usb and it worked great (great sound) but it trips itself up within a song or two...

I have to hook it up while already in play to have any hope of it going. If you touch any controls, it trips itself up and stops. Sometimes it stops by itself - most of the time within a song or two.

    Conclusion: it is useless...

I have a similar issue with my ipod classic, when I first hooked it up to the USB port everything worked fine. I could browse my playlists and select songs via the head unit. But now, the ipod will randomly just shut down and must be restarted by rebooting it (works fine on all other docks, players except in the truck) another issue is I can no longer browse my files at all. Any attempt to browse results in playing the first song on the ipod in alphabetical order

Here is something else to consider, the flashdrive has to be formatted with FAT32 and most flash drives above 16 GB do not automatically come formatted in that format, it is either exfat or NTFS... I have a couple of 64 GB micro Flash drives and had to download a FAT32 formater tool and have had issues with some songs even after FAT32 formatting those drives. The one flash drive I have that came already formatted in FAT 32, a 16GB drive, has no problems, but the other ones have various songs that do not play or other issues.

I have not been able to figure it out and gave up and just used the one larger 16 GB originally FAT32 formatted flash drive....
