USB max music files

Hello everybody,
just got my first Tacoma. I was looking forward to play my favorite music and hit the road, so plugged in my USB from my previous car that contains over 1600 songs and to my surprise the system recognised only 499 songs. I went back to the dealership today and they said that the 2017 Tacoma entune system can only play max 499 files. I'm trying to find here if the dealer not just trying to shake me off or this is for real. Can you please let me know if this happened to you too?

Look in the Nav/Multimedia manual on pg. 123 (2016 manual) and it indicates the USB max number of files is 9999.

 

9999 total files is the limit.

And..... you learned something about your dealer today.

 

There's only a limited number of files that Entune can use in a folder or root. You must make additional folders on a USB flash drive in order to get all songs to play if you have some astronomical amount, like 2000.

 

2000 songs is hardly an astronomical amount

Thank you guys! I appreciate all your comments. I went and checked the 2017 manual and as Hiker46 and tomwil said the maximum is 9999.
So either this dealership hiring incompetent techs or just giving me the finger....My first Toyota! always bought GMC trucks and never been treated this way before (I'm always buying brand new). I'm so disappointed
The system has other issues like VM stopping play and GPS freezing. Dealer's tech had the truck for almost all day and said they updated the firmware but issues continue.

After bringing up the issues to the GM the dealer took the truck back in and look ver it. They still claim the Tacoma has the limit of 499 songs. According to the service department, this was tested in another 2017 Tacoma...so, I'm asking here for your help if you have the 2017 Tacoma and using USB to play music: how many songs your system recognize? Thanks for your help.

If the dealer is close, go there and plug in your usb to a show room model. Also try it out on a 4runner and Tundra. I would guess the issue is with the formatting of the files and folder structure and the GM is just an idiot that doesn't know their product.

 

I just copied my iTunes music folder over to the USB and have no problems playing over 3,000 songs. The iTunes folder has the musicians folder>albums so the most songs in any folder is around 10-15.

 

i have almost 1000 songs on my usb,, it only shows 479 songs..hummmmm

Items related to standards and limitations are as follows:

• Maximum directory hierarchy: 8 levels
• Maximum number of folders in a device: 3000 (including the root)
• Maximum number of files in a device: 9999
• Maximum number of files per folder: 255

 

UPDATE: Went to pick up the truck from the dealership today. Service manager took me to a new Tacoma, I plugged in the USB and the same results: 499 files. I inserted another USB and again 499! Is the manual misleading? They gave me the attached page they received from Toyota. I think I need to contact Toyota directly.

 

it has to be formatted fat32/16 (16 has a root limit of 512 folders)

another big issue i have seen it that the root folder had too many sub folders and/or has ascii characters outside of standard alphabet/numbers.

you cant have that, make your folder structure more compact in the root if fat16
