I would go with the numbers posted by member "NoDak" the one exception that I know is that if the USB Flash Drive is a USB 3.0 and formatted FAT32 and all of the files are MP3 or WMA I have gotten over 2500 files on a 32 Gig drive using just over 8.3 gig of space used. Created one folder per artist and just dumped in multiple albums worth of music into the folder making sure not to exceed 255 songs. All folders are at the root level. This has worked in my 2017 Tacoma Limited which has the Top end Entune - JBL system. I did a full format of the drive before using it.

My 2016 Tacoma indicated there were only 499 songs on my USB drives. The drives had about 1000 files (not in folders) on them. So, I created folders on each drive and put song files in a few folders (e.g., A-J) making sure there were not more than 499 files in each folder. Now it identifies all the songs.

My 2015 (nonJBL, but HD Radio and XM, no nav) seems to max out at the documented 9999 songs. I'm using a SanDisk Ultra Fit 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive. I copied my itunes music folder directly to the drive. It reads the Artist, Songs, Albums, etc, perfectly. How can I get it to read more songs like yours?! I know I have way more songs than 9999. I have it set to random pretty much all that time, did you notice it plays a lot of the same artists?

I have a 2017 Entune Premium Audio and have the same problem. I see, for example, song 245/499 when I have about 1200 songs in the root directory. As others have said, it may be a matter of creating multiple folders, each with 255 songs. I don't want to organize my folders artist/album/title, as all my files are named artist-song.mp3. All I want to do is to randomly play the 1200 songs, like I can on my phone or my mp3 player. Why can't Entune get with the program?!!! I will try the multiple folder approach to see if Entune can then see all 1200 songs.

UPDATE: I moved about 200 songs from the root directory to each of 7 new folders named 001, 002, 003, etc. until all were in folders. Only the 7 folders were visible in the root directory of the drive. I also changed the name of the drive, as someone suggested. I put the drive back into the truck and all is well. I selected random play and it jumps around between folders, as if they weren't even there. The USB source has changed to the name of the drive: Bo's Music. A nice work-around for those who had a 499 song limit in the 2017 Entune sytem. I put my songs on a Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 32GB flash drive, in case anyone is interested. It sticks out of the port 1/4" only.
