I have a 2016 SR with low end head unit. The usb will no longer recognize thumb drive. It worked yesterday and has been for years. I disconnected the battery yesterday, now port won’t work.

When I plug in my iPhone, it works. I am guessing it is because the iphone is self powered.

Is there a power source to the usb port that powers the flash drive and no longer has power?

Everything else seems to work on the head unit and the rest of the dash.

I don’t see anything listed on the under dash fuse panel that leads me to the head unit.

I tried several other drives and found they light up when plugged in, so maybe I am wrong about the power issue.

The head unit just doesn’t recognize them anymore.

I’m not sure, they have all worked for years. I disconnected the battery and when reconnected, none of them work. They work in other devices.

Funny thing is my iPhone works when plugged in.

Maybe the settings in the head unit changed when the battery was disconnected. I can’t find anything in settings to change format. I have the basic unit in an SR.

For now, I am using an old iPhone plugged into the usb port. It works, but I have to turn it on if the truck has been off for a while. I found something in the iPhone settings about it coming on with the ignition, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I read through the manual, but I didn’t see anything that resembled my issue.

They are in Fat32 format. The usb icon on the head unit screen does not light up when a flash drive in inserted, it lights up and works with an iPhone.

fat32 should be the correct format.

only other thing i can figure is that the plug could be worn out/dusty from use, as the phone connection might be a newer cable if you're constantly trying different usb drives.

You can try a cheap can of contact cleaner to spray the connection with , it might help but wouldn't hurt to try .

I have tried blowing out the port with no results. When I plug in a flash drive, the light on the drive slow flashes but the icon on the screen never lights up.

It is funny that it happened right after the battery was disconnected. I thought maybe I blew a fuse that feeds something else but also affects something in the head unit. I have found nothing else in head unit that doesn’t work. I have also not found any light or other function on the truck not working.

I tried removing the fuse box cover to check fuses but I haven't been able to pull it off. I have pulled pretty hard and am afraid of breaking something. The book shows to just pull it off.

I think if your phone is working then it's a flash drive issue. I've had several drives that would light up like they were going to work then wouldn't. I tried usb 3.0 and they won't work. Only thing I got to make mine work 2.0 and 8 gigs or less.

I don’t think it is a drive issue. The drives work on the desktop computer and in my wife’s Camry hybrid. I have tried four drives and none work in my truck, but work in Camry and desktop computer.

If that's the case, probably the port is going bad. If you have a plastic pry tool see if you can wedge it in the fuse cover and gently pry it down.

I looked at a new toyota usb/aux port and it is $150. I found one on Amazon for $30, but who knows about the quality. I don’t know if I can return the one from Amazon if it doesn’t work.

I saw a video of the inside of a port and was surprised to see a circuit board. I assumed it was just wires running to the head unit. I don’t like throwing parts and money at a problem, but it may be my last resort.

It is easy to remove the existing one and put in a new one.

I changed the usb/aux port today and it didn’t fix the problem. The iPhone still works, but it will not recognize a thumb drive.

I will have to think about my next move.

I am by no means extremely well-versed in USB operation, but to me it sounds as if the power going to the USB plug isn’t working. When a self-powered unit (ie. phone) is connected, signal flows. When the device connected (ie. thumb drive) that needs power, nada. That’s where id concentrate.

I'm not sure where the power would come from. Thumb drive lights up when inserted.

Everything on the dash and all lights work. My next move is to start removing fuses under the dash and looking for a blown one. There is no fuse under the dash labeled radio or anything else head unit related.

I would like to find a schematic of the unit and maybe see a power source for the usb.

There is a “radio” fuse under the hood, at least on my ‘06 anyways. Maybe pull the connector on the dash and check the plug for a burnt connection. Same for by the radio. @Dm93 , can we get a little help with a wiring diagram please?

When you plug in your iPhone does it indicate that it is "charging"?
Is is possible that USB is turned "off" as an audio source in your head unit?
