I was reading that some steering wheel control modules are better than others.. What would be the best steering wheel control module brand for the Sony mexgs610bt deck? I am planning on installing an iPad mini into my 2008 Tacoma and mounting the deck deeper into dash.

I would recommend the PAC SWI-PS iF you know how to use it. Otherwise, the AXXESS ASWC is the most user friendly and is what I supply with my setups in most cases.

    Hey guys,

So these won't be ready to ship this week. Us Californians can't cope with the slightest bit of rain, so the recent storm among some other unexpected tasks threw my schedule off.

Here's where the kits are at as of tonight:
    55536A88-9FA3-4778-A3F7-3399CDE6A4CF_zps_324de6eee160ffb6e7a370e134cac402a4ba2586.jpg

They still need a tiny bit of sanding and body work before they'll be ready for paint, but they are looking good so far. If you are overly excited and growing impatient, send me an email or a PM and we can talk about what can be done to get yours done faster. Hint: it would involve changing the way the paint will look.

    Thanks,

    Shane

I'm just happy to see the progress and how great the kits look. Looking great Shane, keep doing what you're doing and just let me know when mine is ready so I can plan for a weekend day to come up to do the install.

    Thanks Drew,

I'm hoping to be able to do a sort of mod day on Saturday the 13th which would be a good opportunity for this. If I can have your kit ready by then, lets try for that. I'll let you know by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week if that will be possible.

$445 to cut the dash a little bit and fuse 2 little tabs barely big enough to hold the iPad in?

If you don't like it you do t have to buy it. You obviously don't know what time and quality custom work costs. You also obviously haven't seen one of these in person. Go look at the competitions pricing for a custom job like this before crapping on a reputable persons thread.

That's ok, it's a long thread to read. I'll break it down for you.

I use 3D printed parts that I designed to make sure these are made perfectly. This allows me to fuse the pieces with existing dash panels, effectively making them the same piece, which avoids separation / swelling that is commonly found with custom dash pieces. The cutting that needs to happen to allow the iPad to fit is pretty extensive, and is not done by hand in order to make sure the cuts are straight and uniform. After all the cutting and fusing is done, there is still much body work, some shaping, sanding, priming, sanding, and professional painting that takes place. This is the bulk of the work, and where most of the money in my price is. Once painted, the areas that make contact with the iPad are suede-Tex coated and a 90 degree lighting cable is permanently fastened to the new dash piece.

It's a very time consuming and tedious process to make these to the standards that I hold them too, which is what determines my price.

@shaneckc I see what he's trying to do, he's poaching. If you read in his info he built his own ipad dash install. I bet he builds and sells them and is searching for business. Didn't make sense why he's in here cause he owns/drives a 2010 F150, but now it makes sense.

I'm not too worried. Nobody builds custom dash pieces like I do. And conventional fabrication methods will always fail over time due to the difference in material properties of custom areas versus existing areas.

Anything that involves mechanical bonding of parts and building of areas with anything other than the same material that the original dash piece is made out of.

Adhesives, fiberglass, MDF, bondo, upholstery glue, etc...

I can ensure. Shane's work is top notch. Dash kit quality is amazing. I have been using his kit with a Audison bit 10 and it is flawless. I have had it installed for about a year now and I am still happy.

Also Shane I need to talk to you about adding in a Sony unit. I miss fm radio.

First things first. For anyone to attack Shane and his product is stupid. I don't personally know Shane but he has been more than helpful in asking the 30+ questions I did. He had the patience to answer them again and again before I finally bit the bullet and bought it. And as of now I still owe him money and he's been understanding of the family issues and costs I've been having to deal with. Shane is a great guy and if his product is as good as he says it is there is no reason for anyone to say otherwise.

Now another question! Haha With the iPad I know I can get a car computer reader thingy that will Bluetooth to the iPad so I can see what the trucks doing. I can also control radio fm am satellite etc. my rearview camera is viewed through my rear view mirror. If I was to add a second camera (in the front of the truck) would I be able to view this through the iPad? Does anyone know of any apps or products that do this?

Thanks Fritz! Send me an email and we can look into FM radio options. Hopefully a Sony Radio setup won't be the best one.

Thanks Rob! If you want a camera that will feed into the iPad, there are a few apps that support such a thing, but the camera signal has to be transmitted to the iPad wirelessly, and I have not experimented with this yet. If you google "wireless backup camera app" there are a few results worth looking into that will come up.

Has anyone been able to get their ipad mini to lock when you turn off the truck? I know there is a way to do it, seen youtube videos, just haven't been able to figure out how to do it with mine. Wonder if there is a setting on the sony radio maybe? If anyone has had success and recalls how to do it, please share.

Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch > Turn it on. This gives you a little dot on the screen (it fades when you don't touch it, but it stays on the screen). I drag it to the bottom right of the screen and I can't even notice it. You can do a lot of custom gestures with that button, such as lock the device.
