Owners manual says drive in 4 wheel drive 10 miles a month. Is this necessary? Page 247

Necessary could be debatable. Good idea however.

I would not say 10 miles is needed but using it every once in a while is needed. Engaging in a straight line and driving a mile should be more than enough.

I've never done the ten. I maybe do it for a mile every month, and that's if I remember.

I think it's a good idea with manual hubs, but is it really necessary with ADD? I mean doesn't everything turn in the front end all the time anyways? That's generally the reason for doing it.

10 miles a month is pretty easy if you do any amount of off-roading. It may not be absolutely necessary, but it sure is fun.

huh. I don't even use 4x4 much when I'm on the dirt, just for when it gets really slushy/slippery

I would think the opposite way, does not seem like too big a deal with manual hubs versus the electronic stuff.

WHAT!?! You mean to tell me that the minute your wheels touch dirt, you don't put it in 4LO? That's insane, do you want to die?:rofl:

I got behind a bunch of guys on a trail a while back that was hard packed dirt and small rocks and they were in 4LO for the entire 14 miles of trail. Made for a long ride.

I figure with how many times I accidentally turn it on when reaching for the AC I'm probably okay.

With manual hubs nothing turns in the front diff at all unless you engage the hubs or transfer case. So nothing would get lubricated if it doesn't turn.

And I thought I was the only one who does that. This is the first 4x4 I've owned w/o a transfer case shifter on the floor.
