a wise friend of mine said "4x4 isn't for getting you in, its for getting you out!" ... I *did* use 4Lo when I was climbing over North Pass in Death Valley in 2 feet of snow. I also used it when pulling a subaru out of a big mud puddle

Just go on trails where you need to use it at least once a month. It's way more fun that way.

I do it as often as I think about it. It took 5 tries to get mine in, and out, of 4X4 high when it was brand new. Now that I have used it a few times, I can get it in and out in one shot.

I just want the peace of mind knowing it will engage when I get it stuck again.

took me a solid hour to get my truck into 4lo when I first bought it. then another half hour to get the rear locker to engage. nastiest clunk sound ive ever heard from a tcase when it finally engaged. clearly the guy that owned it before me never used 4lo or the locker.

I don't think it turns all the time? only think so from first time I greased the zerks. I turned the front with my hands to get access to the zerks. I thought the rears were lined up ok, but they were just a bit off to grease, so I put in reverse and backed up a few inches. It put the rear driveline zerks right where I needed it, but the front drive shaft stayed just where I left it.

Based on the size and volume of front diff, I'd think that bumps and turns are enough to splash enough fluid on the gears, but maybe need to shift just to keep the u joints greased?

I think the main point is to heat it up enough to burn off moisture.

If you have a highway commute just engage it on the entrance ramp to the highway and turn it off as you're slowing down and exiting. That's how I do it

Just do it once per month when it's raining outside. It keeps things lubed.

Front CV's turn all the time isn't that the major cause on boot failure on some lifted trucks? I myself don't fully understand the "ADD" thing but I believe due to it the turning of parts stops at the front driveshaft coming out of the front diff. I have heard reasoning for doing this is too lube up gears and has splitbolt mentioned "to burn off any moisture".

Thanks super informative! So the drivers side is always spinning slinging some lube around in there? I know with manual hubs nothing in there moves unless the hubs are locked or the transfer case is engaged.

    Yes.
The differential gears spinning induce movement on the ring gear as well, so it goes for a dip too.
That's why I believe heat is the main goal and the recommendation of 10 miles.

I use 4Lo alot on the muddy hills we get to wheel on because I have a stick and it saves my clutch. Plus cause I'm just lazy. Mostly the latter. Seriously, wheeling on hills is about the only time you'll really hear me bitch about how these trucks don't have any torque down low. You just can't get up the fuckers without taking thousands of miles off the clutch. 4Lo though and its a cinch

We don't need no stinking manual. The manual also says to change your oil at 10k miles. Most third gen TW Tacoma owners however change their oil at 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, and after that every 3,000 miles.

Not to mention you'll want to be going a lot slower over rocks ruts n shit than 4Hi 1st gear will allow with the clutch out. 4lo 1st gear and let her work.
