Hey guys, just paid Carmax a non refundable transfer fee on a 2013 access cab with one owner and no accidents. Truck has 70k and 2 oil change records. Pictures look mint even the bed. When the truck arrives I have 10 days to buy it or not. What should I look for besides rust and leaks? Any maintenance items? First Tacoma coming from cj's and fj's. Thanks

Same things as you should check before buying any used vehicle:

Look under the truck for leaks, rust, anything out of place, etc...

Check the condition of the fluids, belts, hoses, etc...

Check under the engine oil cap, is it clean with light deposits or is it full of sludge.

If it's a 4wd truck check if the 4wd works correctly.

Look under the seats and dash for evidence of flood damage (rust, stains, etc...).

Drive it and make sure it drives correctly (transmission shifts good, steering wheel is straight and doesn't pull, etc..).

That would be ideal if your not confident in doing one yourself, I see too often that people buy a used vehicle and discover after that it has major issues that could have been found with a pre-purchase inspection.

I'll second @Dm93 on getting a PPI or getting a buddy who knows vehicles well to take a good look all around.

Even when you're knowledgeable, having a sound second opinion is good.

It isn't a gift horse, so look it over well.

$27k I know it's high, but gen 2.5's are hard to find.

I paid about that for my 2015 Tacoma double cab sport 4x4 80k miles carfax showed every single maintenance record and he went to the stealership for an oil change every 5k miles also one owner no accidents, figure when it comes to sell I won’t take much of a hit assuming I keep up the maintenance which I always do on all my rigs

but things to check use a blue driver or scan gauge to run for all codes, I’d run a carfax I know carmax has the experian car report but carfax tells you more

I got a one owner 2013 with 100K last year. New Mexico truck so no rust. I’d dealt with the family car lot before and they’ve specialized in higher mileage vehicles for decades, so they’re careful what they sell. What service records in the canned report were vague, I went to a vin lookup for Toyota and since the previous owner used just the dealer (until covid, when the governor shut things down), and I ended up with 25 pages of records, including one trip just to replace the cabin filter. I paid $24K, but for many years I was an avid gun collector, and learned that sometimes the deal is being able to get it at all.

The last two used vehicles I’ve purchased had Michelin tires on them. This means they were owned by a mature driver who has money. One was a 2005 Honda S2000. If a young dude owned it, it would have Falkens and a rear wing instead.

If you are going to pay that for the truck, request the full-boat vehicle history and service records via the VIN. They will know what you're talking about and how to do it. (Trust me: they already did it.) I did this. It wasn't the 25 pages the previous poster got, but it was about 20 pages and included the whole history of the truck from the time it was made (in Texas) to the time it arrived at the selling dealer and was sold. Warranty, recalls, TSB's, ownership/title transfers, frame inspection....etc: It was all in it. It filled in most of the huge gaps that were on the Carfax report, but also matched it in key areas. I later asked for the same thing from a dealer I use and it was an exact history match. Don't forget that CarMax is just a used car dealer. Use Edmunds or your own bank/credit union to give you a value on the truck.

Take the 24 hour test drive and pay someone to inspect it. Good luck!

Probably a good idea if you are not comfortable with doing it yourself. Heck honestly even if you are comfortable a second site of eyes isn't likely gonna hurt.

Truck arrived from Colorado today and I gotta say it's pretty mint. Drives great and the underside is minty as well. I'm gonna take it home Saturday for a 24 hour test drive and give it a good going over.
