Used camper shell

Looking into a used camper shell, what are some things I should look out for when checking them before I buy?

 

Obvious damage. I will say, that they sell super quick, so be ready to pounce! Bring new seal with you, so you can install it where house buy, without having to reinstall.

 

See it mounted on the truck in person and if you like it, help take it off and install it on your truck.

 

Can I just look up camper seals or should I be getting a specific kind?

don't buy one that has any broken glass. The prices for one pc are insane (if you can even find them).

 

Get one with windoors if possible. You'll be glad you did.

 

I drove 7 hours to scoop one up last year for 6ft hi-rise leer 180 I think with windoors... it was red but I sprayed it with rust-oleum bedliner rattle can and it's holding up great with zero fades or chips after a year in socal sun. I thought for sure id have to touch it up by now.

I unfortunately had to remount mine for the seal(s) after the sale. Did not wanna lose the purchase! lol. It would've been nice to have it all sealed up one and done though.

 

Out of curiosity, what should I look for as far as ones that can support a rack on top? I'd ideally like to have a perfectly flat surface across the entire top of my vehicle to aide In hauling 4x8's, 12 ft long boards, or anytime else that's huge and not terribly heavy.

I bought mine at Home Depot. I’m glad the original owner suggested this before we installed. I spent 3 years looking (on and off) and drove 8 hours to get mine. While I saved money, I didn’t save time, my next truck will have a topper on order the day I sign the paperwork.

 

I’ve got the OVS cap mentioned above on order that is supposed to ship this Monday. They have sold out with pre orders for the last two shipments. Next shipment is early July but it might be sold out by now as well.

 

You will want factory rails on the shell and it should be cab height. From there you have various options to install a cab and canopy rack such as Prinsu racks.

I personally run the OEM cab rack and Yakima cross bars on the factory installed shell rails. Works great for what you’re trying to do.
