Thanks @Taco Roofer, I'm currently exploring all options. My situation dictates that I either travel a fairly long distance to find and inspect an engine, or I order online through one of several reputable vendors. I also spoke with my local Toyota dealer (he's a friend) and he suggested that for used engines they go through "LKQ Online". They have several warranty packages and I wouldn't even consider an online purchase without a warranty.

Thank you for your advice and input. I truly appreciate your help.

I’m on my second “#2” jasper engine. 3rd engine including the original. My fist jasper “remanufactured” engine consumed large amounts of oil.

Have competent machine shop deck the block and line bore the mains then put stroker crank and turn it into a 4.66L stroker motor

This. End of story, even if you have to travel to get it. Large yards will give a warranty and some will also pay for the shops labor if replacement is necessary in the warranty period.

Yep. I'm only on my first Jasper but it burns oil too. I'm just gonna keep it topped off and run it till it explodes. I'll look for a low mileage motor at that point.

My Jasper only has 25k on it, so I figure if I keep it topped off I'll still get quite a few more miles out of it even though it's burning oil.

I'm not surprised most of these Jasper engines are "burning" oil because Jasper engines are shit. Most of them are machined and rebuilt by guys who don't have a clue what they're doing and take shortcuts to get these engines mass produced and out the door. My engine with 133k on it doesn't use a drop of oil and engine is bone dry.

As for the op, sounds like you're gonna have to travel to buy an engine. It'll be worth it to buy it in person so you can inspect it and see it before purchasing and only consider a place that will give you a warranty. I would NOT buy online. And please don't listen to the geniuses that think you can just machine the block and rebuild the engine. That's your last resort and it'll be stupid expensive if you buy quality parts and pay someone who actually knows what he's doing to build it.

I’ve purchased used JDM engines online for my Honda’s over the years, they have all run strong and haven’t given me any issues. The one engine has been in two different cars and I swapped it in back in 2001 ish so it’s old now but still runs good.

In Japan they remove engines around the 30K-50K mark so you don’t have to pay some sort of tax on the engine, so there is warehouses full of engines laying around.

I searched for the 4.0 taco engine but I don’t see many JDM engines for sale online. If you can’t buy one online I would search locally, if you have to travel a couple 100 miles for a clean engine, DO IT.
I wouldn’t trust a Jasper engine in the long haul, my stock 4.0 has 120K on it and doesn’t burn any oil.

    Edit
I just checked eBay there is lots of deals on the 4.0 1GRFE engine on there, priced pretty damn good also. Just check the location to see who is close to NM.

I’d buy a pre-owned engine over a rebuilt one from xyz company. Majority of people don’t know how to rebuild an engine correctly or pay attention to all the small details. Do you think Xyz company is rebuilding Tacoma engines with OEM Toyota rod bearings or OEM Toyota piston rings? I highly doubt it(they have to cut cost somewhere) that coupled with a dude getting paid $15 an hour to assembly engines....

    Just something to think about.

I’ve purchased a couple of used engines in the past, and I can tell you it’s a bit of a minefield. My best experience for used Toyota engines for sale was with Blue Prism Automotive. They were straightforward, offered a decent warranty, and had a lot of positive reviews online, which was a big factor for me.
