Finished swapping my rack a week ago. Anyone want my old rack?

Thought I'd check before throwing it in the trash. I'll go take a picture of it.

You didn't trade it in for a core charge?

If you buy brand new OEM then they will give you a core refund if you return your old OEM one back to them. At least that's how it should work, I'd call them and ask. Might get $50 or more back in your pocket

Of course you could probably get more by selling it if its still in good shape

Would love it if you were closer (I am in NorCal) mine is starting to leak and I am not looking forward $500+ for a new OEM!

I have never been offered or charged a core charge on any New Auto Part .

Rebuilt then your charged the core charge at least here

Some vendors might have a demand for cores not being met they are willing to give credit for your core when buying new equipment

Then where you live who knows what strange practices your state has .

With certain parts like steering racks and CV axles the dealership out here always gives you a better price if you bring in the used part you're replacing.

Thanks eon_blue, good idea, but I checked with the online dealer that I bought from and they said they don't charge for a core.

MikeWH: Yea it's not cheap for the OEM but from the sound of it, like CV's, the way to go seems like. I got mine from Mcgeorge toyota, best price I saw, good shipping/packaging, and it came with newer style rack guide. That with poly bushings and new oem outer tie rods, steers like a dream

I've got the old moog outer tie rods with the rack I took out also if someone wants those too, promise I'll take some pics today to post

Looks like the going price for this new OEM rack should be just under $500.

That's a good question. I'm not sure I've ever seen that info or heard it answered. Koyo being Japanese easily makes sense logistically for the Yotas and Lexus'(sp. Lexuses? Lexus's? Lexii?) that are manufactured there at the factories in Japan. Likely depended on the logistics of the supply chain.
Kinda like how Toyota used Harrison radiators for the Tacomas. Must've made sense logistically to use those, maybe Harrison factory close to the Yota NUMMI plant, etc

If anyone would know it'd be @Dirty Pool. I only bug him with a tag every now and then. :D
I haven't looked at the OEM rack very closely as I haven't needed to mess with it, have you noticed any markings on it anywhere that would help with figuring that out?

The only markings on an OE rack is the name "TOYODA" and a blue/silver sticker.
Google "Toyoda" for the mildly interesting history on that.

I'm familiar with that story, very familiar, the start in sewing looms, etc:D
so the racks must've been made in a family owned facility and shipped over for the assembly in the Tacomas. Unless Toyoda has a plant over here.
I thought the Toyoda with a 'D' was long gone a while ago?

Must have been made by JTEKT Koyo Toyoda. Looks like Koyo is owned by Toyoda.

Well my rack bushings were shot, and in order to replace those basically had to disconnect everything anyway. Put in the energy polyurethane bushings. I did notice some clunking noise/feeling when turning slowly sometimes (still kind of have a little bit too). I had a very mild leak on one side as well (the inner seal where the boots are). I drove for at least a year until the alignment shop pointed out the bushings were bad and said I'd have to replace the inner tie rods too (I just did those like 1.5 year ago). One of those things where 'while you're in there' kind of things and I'm slowly restoring the truck to try and keep it as long as possible.

Funny the new rack does have the "Toyoda" on there too still. Is it in memory of Kiichiro Toyoda then?

I'm moving by Dec 5 and need to get rid of it, or else unfortunately to the trash it goes

Here's pic of the free old rack as promised:
