Thoughts on used truck prices...I can't believe what people are asking for their trucks here in California
I am seeing people asking 28,000 - 29,000 for trucks that are 2-3 years old, and have between 25-50K miles on them. After reading through the thread on 2012 prices people are paying (28-31K), why would anyone buy these used trucks? For 1-3K more, you get a brand new truck with 0 miles. Am I missing something here? Are people actually getting these asking prices? Is KBB really all that accurate? I have heard people say that KBB is no longer a great gauge for used car values, and they are artificially high.

This is the problem I see with Craigslist. Everyone lists high (because they still owe a ton on their financed truck), but I wonder if people are getting close to what they are asking.

    Any thoughts? Experiences?

I was in the same boat as you are in. Wanted a couple of years old truck, low mileage, but they were so close to new, pricewise. At least with new, you get what you want.

That is a problem when resell values for the tacoma are one of the best.

I faced the same issue when I was looking for one. I ended up just getting a new one in November. The financing offered through the dealer will probably be better than anything you will be able to get outside.
Again, the new ones only being a couple thousand more than 2-3 years old ones was very good incentive to buy new.
Before I began searching on CL, I was under the impression that I would be able to find one for 15-20k (2005+ 4wd) but I was super wrong. The only ones coming up at that range were 1st gens with 100k+ miles on them.
It says something good about the truck's ability to hold its value, though. Everybody wants one.

i found that most of the slightly used vehicles at dealers actually costed more than a new one, and it didn't seem like they were willing to really negotiate on them, so i'm assuming they are able to sell them to people who come in looking for a vehicle and are easily persuaded by sales people and/or those that think they are getting a really good deal on their tradeins

I saw a few people asking too much, but I just looked until I found a deal I was comfortable with. I bought mine when 2011s were just out (3 MY old)- Truck had a sticker of a bit over $29k - I bought it CPO - warranty for ~65K miles, brand new tires before I rolled off the lot) for a bit over a 25% discount from sticker.

higher than I would have liked, but no where near a 3 year old truck for 3k less than sticker.

Remember that people want to pay off a truck - and many roll negative equity into a purchase, so their payoff is much higher than its worth.

On the flip side - Mine still "books" for what I paid, with another year of use, and 35k more miles than I bought it with.

Some of this & some of that...
Like most people on this thread, I was in the same boat of used vs new. IMO it's better to just buy it new. It was easier for me to get all the options and extras from the dealer since they have more room to negotiate on newer vehicles. Depending on how you negotiate the deal, you can get everything you want and the dealership gets the sale. Plus if you ever decide to sell it, you have the resale value in your favor. Win.Win for everyone. :proposetoast:

I just bought my 2012 dclb 4x4 OR two months ago and its sticker price was 32000. They had the same exact truck and color in a 2011 with 26000 miles plus extended warrenty for 31000. So it was pretty much a no brainer to go new.

Same deal here in Alabama... Got my 2012 DC Sport Prerunner last week - originally didn't like the 12 front end as much as the 11's, but it's growing on me more every day. Mine had 2 miles on when I sat in it for the test drive, compared to 25k or so for same priced 11.

I need more interior space so I was thinking about a double cab until I saw the used Tacoma prices  The FJ's are actually priced better but my wife said if I get another truck I'll just spend a bunch of money on mods

Yea, used ones are crazy over priced. Dealers might be getting their high prices though b/c it seems people impulse buy from dealers. Drive by, see the shiny tacoma, salesman lays down some bs about hooking them up, yahtzee!!! Sucker born every day.

Private party not the case. Look at CL, it's the same over priced trucks for months. Same with the classifieds here. Dudes asking 27 or 28 for their 2010s with 40k miles. Never going to happen. There is book value, then what someone, with just 10 minutes of internet searching, will pay for it. With the tacomas, that appears to be quite a gap.

At the time I bought new I looked for a used truck for a while. It was crazy the prices of the used ones, and it just did not make sense to buy used.

Well, they can only sell it for what it's worth, not for what's owed if they're upside down. They don't do principle forgiveness for autos, last I checked! So they can ask what they want, but the mkt will only pay what's reasonable. A used truck that costs more than the same thing new is gonna sit. If it holds value well, that's fine, but if it's only a year or two old, that can make for a hard sell.

I just paid $22,300 for a 2011 DC PreRunner TRD with 7,300 miles on it last week. The Dealership was asking $27,000. Four and a half hours later I got the prices I wanted.
