Speak for yourself. I use nav all the time for the situational-awareness of traffic and potential cut-throughs.

Phone can handle the rare occasion where I might need to setup a destination while enroute. Map updates haven't been something I've needed much in eight years of owning factory-nav vehicles.

Of course I'm from the days of paper maps so when going somewhere I need directions for I figure those out before leaving. Yeah, I know, planning ahead is so old-skool.

on long trips I use my garmin. the follow me feature is really nice as it lets the wife know where I am on my trip to see my mom and mom gets to see also (real time tracking)

got to keep the worry worts appeased.

edit : you can specify who can track you and you send a link via email to them so they can track you directly from the garmin unit.

The only times I've ever had a need to share my location in real time has been on big 10Ks, half, or full marathons when my wife is spectating.

Helps her know when to look for me to run past where she's watching from. The FindMyFriends feature on iphones accomplishes that task perfectly.

Never have had a need to be tracked or track others while driving.

That's me and my family. No worry-warts. If it works for you go for it. You don't need to justify your choice, my point was that different folks have different needs.
