It's California - hardly ever rains.
That would have the tires squeeling even more. With rear wheel drive you get better traction when climbing forward, not backward.
Driveway is probably hard-troweled concrete. Sandblast it (at least along the tire paths) to roughen the surface.

If you're still having problems, it's time for a driving lesson.
You could resort to left foot on brake, right foot on the skinny pedal, press down with the right, let up with the left.

Need some more weight in the bed. Try about 4 concrete blocks next to the tailgate.

2wd low with a Marlin Crawler crawl box and let it walk up the driveway with ease

I used to do the same with my old rock crawler Jeep . With a SM465 4spd using granny gear (6.55) low range (3.50) and axles geared at (5.38 ) my overall first gear in low range was ( 124:1)

You want those grooves to run across the driveway and not along the driveway (i.e. NOT running up the grade).
Grooved pavement is more for combatting hydroplaning not slick surfaces.

    Of course.

    For a driveway it'll work, it's not a highway.

Makes sense, so if he could maintain traction then TC wouldn’t kick in.

I found TC to be very aggressive on the 3rd gen Tacoma’s.

Backing uphill puts all the weight on the front axle and makes things worse.

Starting in 2nd gear is a good idea to get started on ice or snow on level surfaces, not a good idea here.

There is a reason trucks can't be put in 2wd low range from the factory. You risk breaking components. Back in the day when 4X4's came with 3 sticks in the floor and manual locking hubs it was easy to shift into low range without shifting to 4X4. There were stern warnings on placards in the vehicles and owners manuals not to do so. I've seen guys snap U-Joints trying this. Modern trucks with automatic locking hubs don't give you that option for a reason.

If you're having trouble getting traction then shift to 4X4 until you reach the top. Shift back to 4X2 before pulling out onto the road. If it is a lack of power then use 4lo to get to the top and once again shift back to 2hi before turning onto the road. Sounds like a poorly designed driveway, but you can work around it with what you have.

Didn't know if they made 2nd gear start on these trucks. My 96 LC has it as well as my 02 Honda Civic.

More like a poorly constructed driveway. Needs to be a rough, broom-finished surface. If it was hard-troweled he can fix that with a bit of sandblasting.
I don't think it's a truck issue - more like driveway surface condition or lack of driver skill (or both).

Parts of my dirt driveway are that steep! All 1/4 mile of it I can stop any were and start again and mine is a manual. All of your weight transfer is to the back you should have no issue.

The true answer is tire chains... I can't believe all of you with your winches and traction boards missed this...

    Check build thread!
It sounds like its a traction issue. I'd say tap the TCS button once, AUTO LSD makes the brakes work like an LSD which I actually use a shit ton on loose dry dusty dirt on my farm.

Do these trucks have a hill assist mode or something?
