And you've loaded the trans with the brake as back up. My way loads the brake with the trans as backup.

Drag racer tool he's innovated with.

I like to have the trans need to turn in the opposite direction of the vehicle, should it move.

Nose uphill would roll back, so I use 1st.

Nose downhill would roll forward, so I use reverse.

THIS. I'm not surprised more people don't know this, because in the 20+ years since I learned this, the only person I've ever met that heard of it, was the one that taught it to me.

The important piece is taking your foot off the brake while in N and parking brake engaged, allowing the load to rest on the parking brake as Bill explained. People think that just engaging the parking brake takes the load, but this is the only true way to do it. It's definitely not extensive, and saves transmissions.

Added note: this process fully emilinates the clunk heard shifting from P, as it eliminates the trans load.

Explain to me how my method is loading the trans? I am not releasing the foot brake until after the Parking brake is locked in. Regardless of when i go from Drive to Park the load is on the foot brake until after parking brake engaged. It's one step less than what Bill is suggesting and ingrained in my brain already so theres little chance of me changing this. especially since i feel no 'parking roll.' my girlfriend had a bad habit of putting her accord in park, letting experiencing the parking roll and then engaging the parking brake...totally useless. Not what im doing.

I park on a very steep driveway daily and i have never had the clunking problem when shifting from P.

The only problem i experience sometimes is when the driveway is icy, after parking brake is engaged, when i release footbrake, i lose braking power to the front and sometimes that causes the truck to slide down the driveway.

Guess it doesn't really matter that much. I can barely get my wife to let the vehicle quit moving before it goes into park. :fingerscrossed:

Lol the guys i work with are the worst. They throw from drive to reverse while rolling at 5mph. Sometimes i wonder how badly they treat their own vehicles

I never use the park brake, I just throw it in park. Only on a hill would I use park brake. I have never heard of someone having to rebuild there transmission because they overused park. The gearing from diff to park pawl in transmission makes the park pawl very durable.

I would disagree, Bill, that it doesn't matter that much. I have seen too many transmission failures that likely could have been avoided if the transmission wasn't always loaded by the weight of the vehicle while parked.

It's not really explaining further though, if OP is already set in your ways.

Oh, I agree. That's why I wrote what I did initially about procedure. I just gave up.

I don't argue with folks wearing a bowtie. They just can't help themselves. :D

I just dont see the load being on the trans as long as i keep foot pedal depressed. I can feel where the weight is going.

 I think thats an old wives tale...about the joints.

Do you also point the wheels in the proper direction when parking on hills??;) I doubt few if any do nowadays....I'll also use my parking break when I jump out of the truck and go to shoot a coyote...:D:infantry:

I started using a parking brake all the time when I first started driving stick. It's just a habit now after all these years I guess, even after switching to AT.

Ill take two with the 376 option please

    Also i just
    Tried your method
And it feels funny cycling from neutral past reverse and into park after the brake is
Already applied. Either way though....is better than never using it at all!!

Does anyone know about cv joints fact ir fiction??

I won't disagree that your method places a lot of the weight onto the park brake, but I can tell you that Bill and I's method is the only one that places all the weight onto the parking brake. I, like most, used your method until I was taught mine.

Though I like my method better because I know I am placing 100% of the weight on the parking brake, I will say that I think your method is probably sufficient for not ruining transmission's; all the failed trannies I've seen were on vehicles with drivers that virtually never use the parking brake.
