Using the tacoma to haul a snowmobile.

So since winter is coming i'm starting to figure out the best way to haul my snowmobile (2006 ski doo rev 500SS) in the back of my truck (2012 tacoma 4x4 access cab with 6ft bed). I'm looking for opinions and what kind of set up works best for hauling sleds in our tacomas. Also pictures would be great.

In the bed of the truck, secured to the bed? Unless you're using a trailer to tow.

 

I would get a used trailer, I run a Triton 11' trailer with salt shields.
Always cover the sled with a cover when towing to minimize salt/road debri.
Nice easy setup and will haul the long track mountain sleds.

 

I had a 144 track in the bed of mine. RMK 800. Fit but just barely, used a pallet to get the skis to clear the wheel wells. I'd encourage you get a trailer.

With my dakars it didn't sag too badly but I'm sure stock springs would suck ass.

 

Definitely buy a trailer...

you can build a platform out of 2x4 and sheet with whatever ply wood you have that is as long as the bed with the tailgate open. screw some traction strips on the part where the track of the sled sits and strap the platform to the bed. distributes the load off of the tail gate and keeps bed from getting so worked. roop on

Ya i would love to get a trailer problem is i have no where to store it or the extra funds to pick one up, so i'm looking at options to haul it in the back of the truck. I have a 121" track so it should fit nicely into the 6ft bed with the tailgate down. Does anyone have pictures of the custom platforms they have made for their trucks? Do you think the stock shocks can handle the added weight in the back?

 

The stock shocks will have no problem with the weight. Rides way smoother with the weight back there.
I haul my SRX with a 136 track in the bed of the truck, your REV is probably a couple hundred pounds lighter. Haven't built a platform yet. Still doing the 1 ski over the wheel well trick.
One thing of note: Studs do a number to the plastic trim across the top of the tailgate.

 

Well... not sure how much your sled weighs but with about 800 lbs in the bed with stock springs my truck was pretty damn close to the bump stops.

 

My sled weighs about 480 dry and its a 155. That thing rides on a trailer lol. I have seen a custom built single sled deck for a tacoma. I think I saved the picture.
