Wanted to run this past you guys to see what you have heard. I got my emissions and safety done the other day on my Tacoma and the technicians mentioned (bear in mind it was Jiffy Lube technicians) that starting sometime this year the state of Utah will not allow off road bumpers to pass as a DOT approved bumper. I am running an ARB front and have heard they are DOT approved but my rear is a Trail gear tube bumper. I plan on going to a rear plate bumper from CBI possibly in the future but not sure what will come about from this news. I don't see this being heavily enforced since so many vehicles including many Jeeps have aftermarket off road bumpers. Maybe I will just have to bounce around from shop to shop next year until I find a place that passes my safety with these bumpers. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Haven't heard anything about that and I doubt that's true. Jiffy Lube... ha! Had an emissions shop tell me they couldn't register me last year because the rear bumper wasn't stock. He didn't know the laws. Utah law says it has to be at least 4" tall, nothing about being stock or not. Took it somewhere else and no problems.

Your mistake was going to jiffy lube. I only take my vehicles to inspection places that only do inspections. There's too much chance for BS at any other place. Once had a guy quoting me prices for a brake job before he had even done the inspection. Can you imagine my "surprise" when he failed it for brakes. I called the Highway Patrol on them about their unethical practices. As for the bumper thing state law is pretty vague and I can't see them changing that.

    Check out this law: http://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S1632.html

In my job I read every proposed bill in the legislature. I don't recall anything changing.

BTW, it IS a Utah law to have a front license plate so make sure you have a place to attach one on a custom bumper. They could only cite you for missing a front plate if you get pulled over for something else (secondary action).

Do you remember how much they charged? I'm debating on doing mine (I've done a few but never a Toyota) and I'm getting lazy in my old age.

I've got the gears and can remove the the third/clamshell.

I will take it else where from now on. They are just down the street which is the only reason I have taken it there but there is always something they want to make a fuss about. Thanks for your input.
Thanks for the advise, I don't blame you, lots of shady stuff they do. I have seen a handful of news stories on their tricks.
Thanks for the link. I went through it and my bumpers check out. Glad to hear this isn't an issue. Thanks again.

You'll have to call them. I think it's in the vicinity of $300 for a regear and ARB install. And... surprisingly I think it's the same price if they pull the third or you do.

    Edit - fits a 2016 Tacoma

Possibly upgrading to a 4 door. So Im searching for a 2014-2015 TRD Sport DCSB 4X4 Auto. Low mileage (under 35K), clean titled and stock. Prefer white., but silver might be OK. LMK if you have or know of one up for sale. PM is best. Thanks.

Just wanted to post up in here since all of the Colorado clowns are busy.

Going to roll west tomorrow morning for a little Utah time.

Wanting to check out the wedge area and the north part of the swell since i need to expand from my normal Moab trips.

I'll be heading back on Sunday at some point but it'd be cool to meet some new people, especially since i spend a good amount of time in southern Utah.
