Can you guys recommend any good places for camping in Moab/Southern Utah? I got a few friends coming from Idaho and we wanna go someplace worthwhile where we can also do a little wheelin. Must be easy trails, most of the trucks just have new tires and sliders, not lifted or anything.

I have camped at Ken's Lake before. Not the most scenic place, but not to shabby either.

I 2nd this. Some Big-O's are shady. This one is great. I live a couple of miles away and use them when I don't want to DIY. Fair, knowledgeable, and good prices.

True story: A few years back my son had an Integra that I diagnosed with a blown head-gasket. I wanted a 2nd opinion and maybe a fix. I took it to these guys and sure enough it was as I expected. The cost of repare wasn't worth it. The next day I was just going to kidney-car the Integra but Big-O called and told me there was another customer in the shop who might be interested in buying it. We got in contact and I made $2000 on the car. This Big-O takes care of you. The owners are honest and truly help.

Be advised that this campground sits at around 9400 ft elevation.

Lots of places down Kane creek. Some are wide open, some are tent spots tucked in canyons. Also a few spots in Gemini Bridges. Not so much wheeling as just a rough dirt road in places. Easy fun for stock. This is the last spot down the little canyon off Gemini.

Also, how is Road 1010? From Google Earth, looks like absolutely nothing for a long ways or what? I have it mapped like you, getting off HWY 24 taking it East back around North to HWY 19. What is the time/distance about and do i need to make sure to fuel up before getting on it off the Hwy. Looks like a pretty long dirt unmaintained road. Also, it looks like this is the road that's pretty close to Canyonlands National park, am i correct? Ok to camp on if need be? and do you know if there is a way to get across to Moab from there or do i need to continue North to HWY 19?

2nd question, Whats on Hells Backbone Rd. you mentioned? I have it mapped like you do as well but i just go on by it do i need to get off on it and explore it?.

Thanks for all your help man with all the links and info you have provided me. Got my AZ and Utah states almost done with the path i want to take! Now just Colorado and i'll be done with my path!

Nice, Batty Pass caves is located directly across the way from Peek-a-Boo / Brimstone / Spooky and it is a fantastic camping area with some cool history.
Road 1010 is a pretty desolate/boring road but you can get to some amazing sites (horseshoe canyon unit, collanade arch, moonshine wash, etc.) it is the same area where Aron Ralston chopped his arm off in a slot canyon (127 hours). Horseshoe canyon is part of canyonlands but it is not canyonlands proper, it was designated part for how remarkable the rock art is there. There is some camping out there but it is not as common as other areas. Also there are some cool sand dunes out there too. Decent camping can be found at the horseshoe canyon trailhead, as well as nearby five-hole arch, and on an area near keg knoll. Unless there is a sign that says no camping then you can camp in this area, try to use established sites though meaning it has a firering. You should plan on refueling in Hanksville after leaving the burr trail/capitol reef.

It is probably about 2 hours from highway 24 to I-70 in Green River without stops, usually pretty well maintained on the main trail but can be kinda rough once you get off the main trail. To get to moab from here you would need an airlift with a helicopter, there is no bridge/ferry to get across labryth canyon and the green, but you can almost see it from there!

Hells backbone is just a cool scenic backway, just a fun road to drive. I suggest it, maybe not the most essential thing to do though.

Horseshoe canyon gallery, my pics do not even come close to doing this panel justice. It is remarkable. Some nice desert varnish in horseshoe canyon. A view from inside 5-hole arch.

Thank you sir. I have all the equipment to back country camp and what i enjoy more. I want to wake up in the mornings and see views like that, with no one else sorta around me! Thanks for all the great info, much appreciated. I have 18 days from work to do it in from KY, so whatever I can see/get done is what I plan on hitting!

I think you got it pretty dialed man! Just remember to leave nothing but footprints and take only photos! If you have any more questions feel free to reach out.

Also, While your mileage’s are correct between points, your times will be off quite a bit. There’s a strange phenomenon that happens to tourists in rental cars... they can no longer drive like normal humans and routinely drive 5-15 mph under the speed limits... have patience, alcohol, and maybe some Xanax.
