A lot of traffic on the way home tonight. Not sure what that means in the big picture. Doesn’t necessarily mean everyone is ready to jell with society.

anyone know when we can legit go off-roading?

Hey Guys, new member here. Im a Utah local that finally has some cash to put down toward moding my 17 tacoma TRD. was looking for some suggestions about what you would first do if you had to do it all over again. with the limitless options out there for modification its hard to find a point to start from. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

How are you planning to use the truck? Depending what you want to do with it, is where I would start.

I would start with gearing, then suspension (includes tires and wheels) and then armor.

    Any pics of the truck?

With all this talk of detailing I got off my butt today and washed the truck in my driveway ... then went on and washed my garage door, then washed all the aluminum siding by my front door. Then sanded a bunch of cocobolo wood.

I'll work on getting some photos here in a little bit but basically its a stock 2017 TRD off-road tacoma. The only thing that done to it so far is changed the tires out to KO2's (on the stock rims, 265/70/R16) and put an ARE CX Series shell on it (still waiting for it, COVID put a damper on that one). im looking to make it into a nice weekend trip/overland trip for chasing pow and adventuring around the surrounding states. I'd like for it to be able to handle trails with some solid terrain but not crawler specific, just getting through the terrain to get to the next camp spot. hope that helps.

Went here from Ogden randomly lookin for close places to wheel and cruise da dirtbike. Mostly dirt road with some good up hill rock/dirt cut outs. Think it goes all the way to hyrum.

What's your end goal? Tire size, lift size, what armor, what accessories, etc? Also, are you bone stock or have you done anything yet? I think if you put a list out there of the things you want guys can weigh in on what they would do first and why.

EDIT: I should read the rest of the thread, I see now you answered most of that :D. Still, a stock truck can handle what you described. Are you wanting to lift it, are you wanting to add some armor, etc?

Cheesus! Slow down. You’re making me feel worthless.

Sometimes I get that way, when I break out the power washer.

Give us your credit card number and we’ll order everything you’ll ever need (until that wears off). We’ll have everything shipped to @Gunshot-6A house, then we’ll have a truck build weekend.

Of course we’ll all be wearing masks and social distancing.

Is it the trail I see in the background? Did you just pull off the road and say this looks good?

I too may get a set of BAMF plates and need to do the re-route for the mid skid. My cross over tube might be smashed in enough for them to fit.. lol

I think you can go anywhere west. I can't find it now, but the DNR had a map. Basically anything East of Wasatch front closed to non residents. Plus there is still a ton of snow.

I think Moab and anywhere south (Escalante, etc.) is also closed to non residents. West desert has some interesting ghost towns, mines, nuclear test sites.. haha

Like others have said, what do you plan on doing with the truck? I would first start out with a decent set of skid plates. I have my eye on the Bay Area Metal Fab Trio (BAMF). This would be my second set of skids. There are several skid plate manufactures (Bud Built, All Pro, CBI, Shockworks). Some full skid sets require an exhaust reroute.

I would then look into some decent all terrain tires or mud terrains (Depends how much you drive on road). But consider if you do put a small lift you might want to wait on tires. I wouldn't go larger than 33" tires unless you want to do a lot of cutting to the fire wall. Going to 35's requires re-gearing (if you actually use the truck offroad) and also creates more wear/ tear on the drive train.

I would then look into some recovery items. Snatch Straps, Shackles, recovery boards, Jack, Portable air compressor.

By the time you start using the truck offroad, you might have ripped off the rear bumper. So go with a high clearance rear. I have the All Pro High-clearance bumper and it has been great. Again, depending upon the bumper configuration, you might need a beefy set of rear leafs (especally for a rear tire swing out).

I would start with basic mods and then go enjoy the truck offroad. A stock tacoma is pretty capable offroad.

That map was specifically about state parks, and didn’t cover other public land. Gotta go to each county’s health department sit for the most accurate info.
