Cameras to prevent pillaging? If they're just gonna bury the wreck, who cares?!

So back when I was a senior in college, we had to give our freshmen cadets a Friday night pass to get out of the bricks for a while and decompress. We decided to make them play the paperclip game: you know, paperclip traded for X, X traded for Y, Y traded for Z, so on and so forth. Best item in hand back in the unit area by 2300 wins some sort of reward.

All us cadre show up just prior to the time hack, waiting to see what lame stuff they bring back, but hopefully their homicidal tendencies towards each other were alleviated for a little while. First platoon shows back up with one of those redbull can coolers like you see at a gas station that they had swindled from some 7-11 cashier for who knows what. For sure, they're the winners, right?

NOPE. 2nd Platoon shows back up with a god damn dirt bike.

They somehow ended up with a couch from someone, but freshman didn't have furniture privileges (other than desk/chair/rack), so they somehow found a guy that wanted a couch, and he offered them a dirt bike in exchange. It was a little older and banged up some, but jeez. We kinda panicked because they had no title to it or bill of sale, and the VTPD was def gonna come an investigate a dirt bike riding around in the cadet quad, so we made them go return it.

Moral of the story: homeboy might just get his Z.

Especially since Z's aren't that expensive. We had to do this in school too and some kid traded all the way up for a used Mercedes, pretty cool game if you're good at it.

That especially insane considering the chip shortage and new vehicle shortages. At least a grab the useful parts or the vehicles that have light damage.

Only issue I can see with that is most people will have issues buying a vehicle using parts from a damaged vehicle. The :crapstorm: that would ensue from dealers not disclosing would be horrendous. I'm guessing the liability is not worth it.

SOME wouldn't have a problem with it but again, most dealers are not upfront with this kind of thing.

I drive three vehicles with salvage titles. Every one of them has the same engine, trans, brakes, air conditioning, seats, and radio antenna that is on any clear titled vehicle of the same model. The damage that was repaired was no more than what people here do to their truck putting "upgraded parts" on them.

But you are correct that most people have the idea that a minor scratch makes a car or truck worthless.

And you are also correct that we live in a world of lawyers.

Yeah, I've heard of people getting salvaged cars. They have like no damage on them but just happen to have a salvage title. Some of them just so happen to be in the same lot as a totaled car from flooding but the good car was sitting up high above the water and the insurance adjuster is just going, "all these cars are now totaled". lol.

Two 2012 Tacos, one a Baja Series, one with 72K and the other with 68K... and it took less than a full day to fix them and less than $500 in parts for each.

    Average purchase price 10K.

I'd have issues with flood cars but these were totaled for damage that could be repaired in my driveway.

My understanding is there's also a brand if your vehicle gets banged up in shipping and the repairs are over a certain $ amount (thats pretty minimal) before first title as a retailer honesty/disclosure mechanism.

Anyone here have a crash pad/space they wouldn't mind renting out to three guys the weekend before Thanksgiving in the St George area? Friday night 11/19 - Sunday morning 11/21. I figure I'd try to enrich a fellow TW member before a random person on Airbnb.

On a semi-related note: Does anyone know where the new Cobalt Kinetics rifle range in St George ACTUALLY is? They only list their storefront, not their range. Kinda stupid when they're hosting an event. I know its in the no man's land by the airport but thats all I know.

I'll put this out there one more time. I'm looking for a set of 16 inch, six lug wheels for a Taco.

Turn some dust collectors into cash...

I wasn't thinking of dealers going down there and salvaging... I was thinking of the general public! If Toyota is just gonna bury the mess, then let the people have at it.

Sadly that's the world we live in. I work at a ltl trucking company and we are instructed by the shipper to destroy freight if it has been refused for even light scratches.

Yea... I'm sure it's all at the direction of lawyers and insurance people. It's ridiculous how much goes wasted basically due to liability.

They ain't burying nothing in the desert. The EPA would fine the ever living shit out of them, as well they should. Insurance will pay off and the rebuilders will turn them into low mileage trucks with salvage titles.
