well, Got the thermostat replaced. went for a drive. temperatures held fine. actually dropped whenever I gave it some more throttle input. Great. Let it idle for about 45 minutes and saw it go from 208 to 212 in that time period. VERY slowly. and then drop quickly back down when i gave it some throttle input. I think the thermostat might've actually been the culprit. temperatures were climbing when it was idle or lower RPM's...and dropping a bit more when I gave it some more input because then it was pulling more coolant through the broken thermostat.

I also noticed the gasket was easily torn apart and what seemed to be signs of a leak around the old housing. so. yeah. fun stuff. I'm hoping this is all it was.

    fun stuf.

How many miles do you have? Gotta love toyotas. IMO, they have just as many problems as other manufacturers. As long as you do basic maintenance, you can limp along for 250-300Kmi. I think Jeeps can limp along for a bit as long as you don't install a supercharger (JK/JL).

Here are some things wrong with my 2011
    - I think my timing cover is leaking. This is a common issues with the 1GRFE engines with over 100kmi. It isn't a bad leak, I just dont like seeing oil residue on my engine. I am not sure whats involved with the fix, but I think it is nearly an engine tear down. Paying someone to fix this will be $$$.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/timing-cover-leaking.562585/

    - Throwout bearing chirp. This is apparently a design flaw with the 6-spds and toyota never really found a fix.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/throw-out-bearing-chirping.480464/
Some manufacturers apparently created a fix, but the jury is still out on if the fix is long term.

Hah. I've got 122k on this one. 3rd gen. i also have a small timing cover leak. but similar story. it's minimal but i'm noticing the oil residue. not pretty. But yeah, same. it would be a lot of money to get this one fixed.

    EDIT:
I boiled my thermostat. it looked like it opened. but the actual opening around the valve is tiny. maybe something with the valve itself was preventing problems....? idk. i'll maybe take it apart later if i feel like it.

I made it out there for the first time last year. It's still a fairly small event meaning you can still get right up close to the action and since I live right here it was cool to be able to see some areas to go back and play on later

    Did you ever "burp" it?

Is there coolant in the oil?

Have you started it cold, with the radiator cap off, and are there bubbles coming up especially at high RPMs? If so... bad head gasket.

    Burp. Yes.

Coolant in oil? Can't see any. Nor smell any.

Cold with cap off. Haven't tried that one.

    Pressure test the coolant system.
May have to do a leak down test of cylinders also. Bonus. If you pull a plug and it’s super super clean. Like it’s steam cleaned. There’s the cylinder with your issue.
Being a 2017. I’d seriously look at the rear coolant bypass pipe. There’s threads on it. It leaks behind the intake down the back of the engine. By the time it hits the exhaust it evaporates. Easy place to loose coolant and not hold pressure and not know.

Yeah, I might have to go rent some tools and pressure test and maybe to a chemical test on the coolant. I think I might also do a compression test on the cylinders. Good thing I know how to get the plugs out.

I've heard about the rear bypass pipe. I don't think I'm losing fluid through there. I think there just might be pressure building up from the cylinder/gasket because of a head gasket. but I will definitely still look back there when i have things taken apart. I have my cheap scope I can use. This is gonna be a fun week.

Come to think of it, I did tiny bubbles in the reservoir tank at one point inthe fast few days.

Yeah... that's not what I'm talking about.

With a head gasket leak you can get bubbles in your radiator and even eruptions spewing fluid six inches in the air. That's why you try it cold, so you don't kill yourself. All head gasket leaks are not like this, though, so you can still have a leak if it doesn't spew fluid. Just a sure sign if it does it.

If it ends up being a head gasket, I am curious as to what would have caused that. It seems like your vehicle is still relatively new (17).

Yeah. Me too. I'm very curious what would've caused it because then I can address the root problem. I mean, I have a lot of miles on it. 122k. But a lot of that is highway as I drive down southbound or to PC during the summer from Lehi. a few sprints of harder driving as I go through dirt roads and shuttle friends with mountain bikes but nothing that I really stressed over. All within normal operating parameters.

It could just be....bad gasket that just deteriorated over time. but i'll keep you posted as i dig into this. If I end up pulling that head gasket, I'll definitely be posting pictures.
