Have you seen the "Lone Warrior" petroglyph south of I-70 just west of the 131 (?) exit? My favorite of all time, personally. The "Segregation Panel" is also thought provoking. Hopefully it is more like "Integration". There is a lot of art just north of the hiway and west of Lone Warrior too.

Question: aren’t abs brakes supposed to prevent the wheels from locking up?

They "pulse" when engaged with force. They maintain traction by preventing the wheels from locking up.

BUT... ABS brakes CAN lock up if there is no traction to be had. On surfaces that are extremely slick and offer no traction, the brakes can lock up.

Yes and no. Its more of a Lock, Unlock, Lock, Unlock really fast paced. Depending on conditions. The computer senses a whole bunch and determines it. I can for sure fully lock my brakes in sand or snow in my 17. But will have ABS pulse if slammed brakes on pavement.

Yes, I agree with the above. However, I’ve never had mine pulse. On the way home tonight I had to jam my brakes and in return left a nice skid mark. It wasn’t long, but the whelks didn’t lock up.

I always thought snow/ice is when abs brakes were supposed to shine. Mine always lock up. I have to do the old school brake pump.

On dry pavement the pulse is so fast that it can feel almost like rough sandpaper passing over a surface. That's what makes them effective. They pulse much faster than a person can "old school brake pump".

I was driving a company truck on their ice covered entry to their own property, which had a gate, and the brakes locked up almost fifty feet from the barrier. I kissed the gate hard enough that it put a golf ball size dent in the hood. They said it was my fault. I'd complained several times about the tires on the truck already. I knew the truck should have stopped anyway at the speed I was going. I had to contact Ford and get an explanation to defend myself. They still didn't believe that the truck brakes would lock up... because "ABS". But they called and spoke to the person I'd gotten the information from and couldn't fire me. It didn't sit well with them and they eventually found a reason where it would have been difficult for me to sue them.

Isn't there an ABS fuse even?
I would assume that some type of warning light would indicate the ABS was malfunctioning but still worth getting it checked out if you feel like it didn't work as expected.

No warning lights, but yes I believe there is a fuse.

There is an abs light that will illuminate on the instrument cluster if the ABS system is not functioning correctly. At least there is onn my 2008.

Is your 3G taco ABS all around, I can't remember? I know my 1G taco only had ABS in the front, and the drums out back weren't so you could make some sick skid marks if you had to lock it up.

Yes, they are all the way around, or at least I put three SDHQ abs guards on something. The fourth something didn’t require it.

    Yes, its ABS all wheel.
Pretty much anything made after 2004 requires all wheels to have it.

Well, I've done a bad job of remembering to post the trip here, but since this is the section I was asking about - with Fixit Pass - I can't forget to share a few photos from what turned out to be an amazing day. Thanks again for the help/insight into trail conditions.

...The plan - if we could do it - was to follow Devil's Racetrack to Coal Wash to Fixit Pass and finally to Neilsen Dugway, ending up where we started. I say "if we could do it," because prior to departure, I'd learned that Fixit Pass had been unfixed by storms a few months earlier, and a couple of the videos I'd seen were somewhat hairy looking. Enquiries on various forums and groups hadn't yielded much in the way of information, so I knew that we could find ourselves backtracking if the road was impassable....
