I’m in ogden and yes, it’s necessary here. When it does actually snow, those plow trucks throw salt everywhere.

I’ve done mine a couple times and have learned a few tips from trial and error. I’m more than happy to help get you started. I highly recommend doing it yourself instead of paying $700+ for someone else who won’t care as much as you. Go stock up on an angle grinder, wire wheel attachments, wire brushes, putty knife, rust reformer, POR15, fluid film, and some nice knee pads. You can either half ass it and redo it once a year or do it right and redo it once every 5-10 years.

Thank you for the advice! This is exactly the kind of helpful, no BS answer I was looking for. I'm going to take it and get it done before we get too far along in fall and winter.

If anyone has or knows someone who has a set of used 285 R16 tires in decent shape they need to get rid of let me know. Looking for a set so I can finally ditch my 265's thanks!

How long have you been long traveled? I have been long traveled for over 10 years now (mostly in so-cal, and the past 7 in utah). The utah winters aren't kind to the race parts. I am gunna take my front end apart in a couple weeks to re-powder coat my arms and get a front shock rebuild re-zinc.

Maybe 6 years? 2 of those were in Utah and just the front. Now I’m safe from salt in NorCal. But I did visit Utah a couple years ago during winter for about a week. That week absolutely destroyed everything. Rear leaves totally rusted. My front bypasses corrosion city.

I ended up finally fixing that by pulling them apart, cleaning with a wire wheel and hitting them with steel it. Looks much better.

Here’s the before. Look at the condition of that bypass.

Nice. I have to annually re-paint my rear leafs. My rear bypasses look horrible after just one year (i got them re-zinced in 2021).

Also FYI, the camburg performance 4x4 spindles work with the chaos +3.5 kit. Im sure they will work with your kit since you are using stock spindles. I think I am one of the first customers to run the spindles on a non camburg long travel kit.

I purchased them last year with a 14 wk lead time. I had a bent spindle after hitting a hidden rock out near Dumont dunes in 2014. My alignment always felt 'off'.

It’s crazy how quickly that salt ruins stuff. I used to fluid film everything before winter. That stuff is so gross. Glad I don’t have to do it anymore.

Also damn you. I thought I was done with big purchases for a while. Those spindles look good.

If you do get them, you might need shorter bolts depending upon your lower uniball adapter. I had to get shorter grade 8 ones since the chaos adapter is thinner than the stock one that my taco had.

Also the thread is fine for the tapped part of the spindle vs course on the stock spindles. I think it's like 5/8- 18. Luckily Marshalls industrial supply is near by.. my first set of spindles were garbage from camburg. They had powder coat over spray on the axle/ hub machined interface. That tolerance is already too tight for the bearing hub to fit correctly.

Also they should have packed these in a crate vs a cardboard box and news paper. I sent them back. Luckily they had another set in stock and overnighted them. I almost requested a refund and was gunna buy a new set of stock spindles and then reweld the gusset on them..

I have two I saved from the fire. They need to be cleaned up but they will work fine. You can have them if you want.

Anyone here trimmed up their fenders on a 2nd Gen?

I’m hesitant to trim them without a plan for the liners.

Reminds me of the scene in Harold and Maude where the kid fires up the cutting torch and you just know he's going to be cutting on the XKE.
