I was living in Emerald Isle headed for work. In the fast lane 45mph in my old gen1 passing two slower vehicles in the slow lane. A suburban tried to pass me in the slow lane and then get in front of me to pass the other two. She didn’t make past me. Missed my rear bumper twice and ended upside down in the ditch and she had to wait to get cut out! I usually try to avoid the road after it’s been scraped or refreeze after that..

I took my brand new taco out there Wednesday and there are some trails that you can do without messing up the truck; however, there is always the potential to do something, but just take it slow and you'll be fine. My truck is completely stock just with some AT tires and i had no issues, I did scratch up my running boards a bit and dinged up my 20 inch rims (selling, getting 17s with 33inch tires soon), but I knew these things were going to happen, so if you don't want to risk anything at all happening, I'd stay away from the trails. But it is a blast!

URE doesn't close based on the weather with the exception of severe storm damage like from hurricanes. The OP has a link showing season dates and any relevant updates.

Got my skids rearranged.cold steel doesn’t like to bend,so I just tightened the mother down on the front and mid on drivers side. At least the lips are overlapping! It ain’t coming off and the skids lifted my truck with the floor jack! @EddyRRT makes some strong armor!
We’ll see how the weather is for a trip tomorrow..i’ll be in the snow somewhere!!

You just gotta send it. I was nervous on my first run at URE. But after seeing what my truck is capable of, I know I had no reason to be nervous from the start. Just read up on the trails and dont go down one thats too hard by mistake. I found it easy to get lost down there especially if you have no map. Download one on your phone too, the outpost was out of paper copies when I went.

Edit: Only carnage I had was the anti squeak pads I put on my add a leaf's ripped and now my truck sounds like a 90's Chevy. Dont buy extra leafs if they dont have the squeak pads already on them.

If you are super worried the entire time wheeling, the joy is seeped out from the experience.

Def start on just dirt/gravel trails if any damage will upset you. As your comfort grows you may widen your threshold for accepting some blemishes haha

Like others have said, it’s very addicting!

You won't get any damage as long as there is a good spotter, you don't get ran off the trail by Jeep's, and don't try putting your rig in some gnarly lines. URE is pretty tame relative to other parks

Pretty much all of URE to get to different areas are dirt roads. The trails there are quite a few easy ones that would be good starter trails. Get a map or look at the map on here. 90% of rocky mtn loop and any trail other than the D names you're good.

Wolfs den trail is the "easy" one. But its no gravel trail. You start with a dirt trail with a bunch of dirt humps to drive over, a small creek crossing, then go up a lose rocky incline. Then a small rock slope that looks intimidating to a newb, but theres nothing to it. Then more humps and your out of it.

I found that things look steeper while your in the truck than they actually are. Take your time, and dont go after a rain storm as the easy trails will get harder. Enjoy the ride, airing down isnt really mandatory on the easy trails, but it can give a smoother ride. I wouldnt know, I didnt do it. :p

Plenty of forest roads to explore too, UHE is huge.

thanks guys! I appreciate all the help/advice. my plan right now is to ride with my boss in his Jeep. that way I can get a lay of the land with my own eyes before taking my truck out.

sad thing is, now my daughter wants to take her brand new 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk out there...

I've seen a Jeep Renegade trailhawk, or whatever the trail edition is, out there on Daniel (one of the harder trails). All he had was upgraded tires.

Wow, the Renegade is the smallest one...but all of the Trailhawks are Trail Rated from the factory. my daughter's has the adjustable suspension with crawl mode. but I am not sure if it has the electronic sway bar disconnect like in the Rubicons? but, she does have the stock crappy Firestone Destination AT tires.

Eh I think trail rated is kind of a marketing ploy. Even before the trailhawk stuff Jeep was putting trail rated badges and using it as marketing for their stuff.
