You guys with high mileage v6 5-speeds, how long did your clutch last before having to be replaced?

My 99' v6 5-speed 4x4 with ~187k miles is on the original clutch. I tow a lot, and I'm getting ready to tow a trailer about a thousand miles from home, and that got me thinking about the clutch. It works fine, but sooner or later it's got to wear out, so I'm curious how far everyone else has made it on the original clutch.

I went to 150,000 miles and got nervous... changed it when I probably had a shitload of miles left. The wear should be somewhat gradual and give you some time to fix it before disaster strikes, I'd keep going.

I had around 140,000 to I let a clueless person drive my truck I venture I could have made it another few years .

    @ 60,000 on a Luk clutch

It all comes down to your driving habits unless this trip is going to call for constant pulling out on hard grades with both the truck and trailer overloaded .

jesus christ, you guys are getting a lot of miles on these clutches. I haven't had my truck for very long yet, but on my last car (Scion tC) I had to change out the clutch at around 90k miles and was told by the mechanic that's usually around how long a clutch will last (he said between 90-150k).

Only 26k on mine right now but I sure hope I get as many miles out of it as you guys are. I'm supercharged though on what I believe is an OEM clutch....should I expect that it'll wear out faster than normal?

I don't drive like a maniac, rarely ever go full throttle even with the s/c (don't have an upgraded fuel system yet and it'll ping if I do).

Aside from just having a really durable clutch, the key to clutch life is don't drag or slip the clutch a lot. When you start out from a light, don't rev the engine high and let the clutch slip, instead only use a little throttle and let the clutch all the way out before the RPM's get high. When you shift try to match the engine RPM to the transmission RPM when you let the clutch out so that there's no slip required. If you're hauling up a hill, or up a boat ramp, use 4x4 low to get rolling. Sometimes when I'm towing at the max capacity (5000#) I'll use 4x4 low to get rolling from a red light to save the clutch. The only time I haven't figured out how to avoid lots of clutch slipping is when backing a trailer into a really tight spot, where you've got to make lots of adjustments and take your time. Can't use 4x4 low there because the wheels will bind up while you're turning, so just have to slip the clutch.

You guys who have replaced the clutch on the v6; is it a difficult or time consuming job?

OME, sliders, dents, hail damage, soiled armrest. Lightbulbs.
185K miles here, with a couple years of off-roading, and a few tough towing trips of a few thousand miles.

Clutch was slipping a teeny bit, but the nail in the coffin was when some aluminum piece of the tranny mount broke off and the clutch pedal no longer controlled the clutch. That was not awesome. Experienced tech said he had never seen that before.

My neighbor has well over 200k on his orginal clutch and it just started slipping.

My dad has 130k on his. It is suffering from some oil contamination from a leaky rear main so it will need to be done soon.

Mine is original and going strong at 146k, but i have the 2.7l

130k. I was building my lefty and rebuilding my crawl box so i decided it was time to do the clutch while i had everything apart. The stock clutch still looked great. Running a marlin clutch now at 175k and I'm sure the truck will rust apart and be scrapped before the clutch goes.

225 thousand kilometres over 17 years and then we sold the truck! Saw the truck yesterday and he new owner loves it...almost as much as we love our 2015 DCSB. Highway driving, towing, getting firewood, hunting....

The only "issue" I've heard about mine (205k on the original clutch) is that @Squeaky Penguin 's little pinter legs had a hard time pushing my clutch pedal. When I drove his truck, with a new clutch, it felt like my gut.... softy and mushy.

Got 84,000 ish on mine feels fine but at times it sounds like a cricket is in there untill i put the slightest pressure on the pedal and it goes away.. think its t/o bearing which i was told replace the whole clutch and not just that since the amount of labor involved .
