so does the "SURGE" happen while accelerating hard or just cruising along to get up to highway speed?, just curious since I may have experienced this 1-2 times over 2 years, just thought it was normal since it doesn't happen all the time..

Can't wait for the 6MT TSB. Note to Toyota: whoever wrote the ignition-fuel-VVT maps for these ECUs needed some more coffee! My truck is as jerky as a kangaroo on speed when it's cold.

Not for 2018’s. I wonder if we already have this update?

"The ECM (PCM) should NOT be replaced as part of the Repair Procedure."

Never heard of a dealer replacing a chip. It's either R & R the whole box or a program update, like

"flash the ECM (PCM) with the NEW calibration file update"

Great. Another update for Auto only.

Although, one of the calibration IDs in that TSB is for an M/T if I'm not mistaken (04B12!!!)

    Interesting either way...

Make sure whoever flashes this update reads it and sends it to OV

Does your truck jerk in the 40-50 mph range? If not, then you're good and don't worry about it.

Because its for control of the lock up converter.

One of the things wiggle sticks don't have.

It's not a recall so it's just based on year and type. If your truck does not have a surge then it does not need a flash. Actually this is the first time I have heard of this issue.

It's interesting the part of the update procedure is to add an under hood label with the new calibration ID on it. Are testing centers looking for that to match the calibration IDs?

Yeah, I saw that too. They listed new calibration id as 04B13. Maybe Mat can take a gander at the file.

Sigh.. yes I know, my point of course is that no issues WRT M/T trucks and our ECU calibration have been addressed by TSB. I guess that makes sense, as the vast majority of trucks sold are autos. I don't have to like it though lol. BTW, one of the issues with the M/T is also surging.. it's just for a different reason.

Oh this will cause some work for Mat on the auto trans side for sure.. New calibration version to deal with.

Edit: Actually, the TSB states that all A/T versions (except '18s of course) will be updated to 04B04.. hmmm. IIRC, Mat has already done a bunch of work with lockup and such. It will be interesting to see what Mat finds out when he gets his hands on it.

But it can't be a super rare occurrence, otherwise why would Toyota change their calibration? This issue obviously made it onto their radar. It's another example of customer feedback effectively improving the product, and I applaud Toyota for doing it.

Yeah I have no idea what their metrics dictate. Is it 100 occurances? 1000? 10K? No idea but it is good to see a response. I've probably had a dozen new Toyotas, starting with a 1984 4Runner I drove (literally) out of the showroom. I was 21. I have never seriously had a problem the dealer or Toyota couldn't fix. I did have a 4Runner once that must have been built on a Friday evening right befor a Japanese holiday lol. That thing had rattles and problems galore. The dealer worked on it for days and got most of them and I traded that thing in as soon as I could!
