i have worked on the four banger a good bit on older tacomas and a few newer ones. the four banger will most likely give you the most life for two reason that i can come up with. A v6 is in a v configuration so generally gravity is going to take its toll over time on the piston rings pressing slightly harder on the lower side of the cylinder wall as compare to a four banger have mostly even wear on the ring and cylinder walls. The final reason is toyota has made some incredible four bangers in their time and i have always stood by the the reliability of the toyo four baggers fromt the 22r (my sister 1988 taco 4x4 has 285000 miles and still kicking) al they way to the new 3rz 2.7L. thats just me though. not saying the v6 is a bad motor cause i still like them also.

i have a v6 in mine and i put about 500 to 600 miles a week on mine, Ive had to replace 1 injector, but it was my fault because i sucked water up into the engine when i was mud riding, which i have done 3 times so far and i have 200,567 miles on it right now and i wouldnt hesitate to drive it across country.

Seems like either motor is pretty solid. My only concern is how im going to feel about the mpgs after a few months of driving. Especially with gas prices continuing to go up. Its always nice to have the power there when u need it though. If I could find a 4cyl dc trd that would sure be rad.

All scheduled maintenance, no mods at all. Not even CAI, after I got it K&N I have going to change the oil within a day or two. I am currently looking into changing the supercharger's oil too. I found a DYI kit on eBay for $16, there is another kit with a new nose bearing and coupler for $60. Other then that it has been well maintained, the interior is pretty beat up though the original owner got rid of the bucket seats and put in a hideous bench seat.

I have my truck's history from about 111k till now (169k), so anything before that would be a guess.

    2 timing belts- 1 at 111k and 1 at 148K
    NGK plugs
    fuel filter
    O2 sensors
    Oil every 3K
I have a thermostat on stand by

The engine bay is still really clean, I don't drive it in the mud AT ALL!!
I will drive it in the snow like a MO#$%# F#$#^# but not the mud.

i just bought my 2004 tacoma prerunner sr5 xtra cab with the 2.7L 4 cylinder and i love its a tourqe monster for a four banger and pull pretty good to. i average about19.5 mpgs around town and nearly 24mpgs on long hygway trips. i also ahve bigger tire and keep the pressure low for traction.

Selling my 96 Tacoma to fund the FJ80 build up.
My father-in-law worked a similar job with travel and paid fuel. He has 300K+ on his 1997 V-6 x-cab 4wd. Only issues I recall were the Odometer began making lots of noise at just over 200K, so he replaced it. He did have one minor issue with the cruise contrlo kicking out but got that quickly resolved. The rest has been normal maintenance T-belt / water pump / fluids brakes / tires. The truck is ultra clean and other then the shocks struts being worn out again (2nd set) the truck rides and drives like new with no issues. He left that job last year and now has to pay his own fuel so he bought a VW Pasat 1.9 TDI for his hwy driving.

265,000 on my 98' 2.7L and never really had problems, except cracked exhaust manifold. My truck should be dead the way I have treated it.

So special thanks to all you folks for your unput. Based on that, and assorted other things... I purchased this (excuse the low quality pic) 04 dc sr5 taco w/ 80k. Got the locking rear end and most anything else I wanted in this vehical.

First thing I did is come home and take my dog for a ride.
