I have a 2008 Tacoma TRD 4x4 manual, I ran the engine out of coolant and need a replacement. Is there a difference between a trd engine and base model engine? Does the trd have any additional sensors or anything that the base model wouldn’t have? Will the trd computer run a standard Tacoma V6 4.0 4.0L?
curious if I need a trd engine or it can be the stock sr5 engine.

    Appreciate your guys’ help!

TRD package on a tacoma has nothing to do with the actual 4.0 engine. Did you ignored the temp gauge when it was creeping up while driving?

The TRD probably has the oil cooler, which has a few unique hoses. Everything else should match up. Just keep both motors until your install is done. When I swapped motors, I spent a good amount of time searching for differences. I found none between a 2006 and 2010 motor.

The engine oil cooler is part of the tow package. Although most TRDs came with the tow package, not all did. It’s a completely separate option.

The tow package includes a transmission oil cooler if the truck is an automatic and a engine oil to water heat exchanger(oil cooler). The circled part in the pic is the coolant hoses for the engine oil cooler.

The only difference you may run into is 2012+ engines. They will have an air pump. You’ll just needed to swap your parts to the new engine.

FWIW. Some of the FJ cruisers used a different 4.0 engine. You’d be better off sticking Tacoma engines to avoid a costly mistake.
