I think the Hoover Platinum Upright, as you get 2 for 1 (The Upright, AND a canister), AND its Consumer Reports top pick (mine too), 12 year warranty , and chicks dig it.....well......as much as they can dig a vacuum anyway...

The Dysons are an Origami plastic POS just waiting for the right time to break on you.

The Orek, while built quite well, dont suck as good as the Hoover.

probably any one of these three would be good. If it was me choosing I would go with dyson if you want longevity.

I have never heard of air blowing on a vacuum cleaner motor to keep it cool. I do not think a vacuum cleaner runs long enough where overheating would be an issue. My Dyson does not lose any power even when the cannister is full. The filters can be cleaned with soap and water. My dyson has probably paid for itself by not having to buy costly throw away bags. Bags are like ink cartridges and razor blades the profit for the companies is the consumer buying replacements for these items. As far as the Dyson not sucking up the paper. My guess is that the machine with the handle laying flat like that does not allow the belt to turn the brush.

Nice vids Chris...Oreck FTW in the 2nd vid hands down

Seems like every mom and pop vac store always recommends the bagged vacuums. I think they know more about the industry as they service all types of repairs. The one I visited recently used to be a Dyson dealer but dropped them to the service work and lack of customer service.

^ I agree with this. I have the Oreck now, but if it died I would replace it with the Hoover. The Oreck is very light and that is great if you have to carry it upstairs, but it is more expensive and doesn't perform as well as the Hoover.

I don't know much about the Dyson. I do remember reading in Consumer Reports that the animal model wasn't very good at picking up dog/cat hair.

If Chris' Hoover performs better than the Oreck XL in that video....then dangit this could sway my decision....Chris?

    Love it.

Easy to maintain, easy to change attachments, long extendable hose for going up reaching up the stairs, never had any issues worth speaking of that wouldn't occur with any other brand.

I cant remember which model Orek I tested the Hoover against. While the Orek picks up great, the Hoover was just a bit better. When I compared the 2 in the store, the Hoover was pulling the "test dirt" twards it, from about 2" away, while the Orek wasnt. For less money, and a longer warranty, are a couple reasons why I chose the Hoover over the Orek. The comparison at the time got my buddy to buy the Hoover also, and he says its the best vac. he has used.

Another thing about the Hoover Platinum....It has a High/low switch (button), and a Bag Full indicator. The bag Full indicator is a little presumptuous, but it still gives an idea of how full the bag is getting. I use the Low setting for tile floors, and the bed spread. Keep in mind, the Hoover, if used on a small rug, will attempt to suck it up. The weak link on the Hoover is the light. It doesnt put out that much, but shoulnt be an issue if you turn on lights when vacuuming.

Agreed. You also get less suction, and less warranty, for more money :p

After much contemplation and help from TW I went against the majority and pulled the trigger on the Hoover Platinum :p

I scored it from Walmart...on line, shipped for $218.00 and should be here by Friday. I think it was the best value at the moment and hope that it doesn't fail anytime soon.

Fuck the bagless...too dirty! Can't wait to use the bonus canister vac for the truck :D

This is not true. As advertised no matter how much dirt gets inside the cannister it continues to suck like mad. I will agree they are more expensive than those cheapie units, don't know about the warranty mine never needs it.

Bagless are actually cleaner than fooling with those bags. When you pull the bag off all that dirt and invisible dust goes into the air. The dyson just unclick the cannister stick the end into an old walmart bag release the bottom and it all goes into the bag no muss no fuss, but of course just in case I can take the cannister to the garage and do that. With the Hoover you would have to take the whole machine into the garage to do it.
