Anybody here ever install a vacuum gauge in their 2nd gen? I'm going to go ahead and do it. Found an A-pillar pod and have an old gauge. Any plugs on the intake manifold that would make a good port for the plastic line to attach? In a nutshell, I'm going to use it for hyper-miling. Kind of a shits n giggles thing. A friend back in the day had a '65 Impala with a factory vacuum gauge in the console ahead of the shifter! TIA Cheers, Dave

What do you hope to accomplish with a vacuum gauge? And what is "hyper miling?"

Buy a blower, then plumb into boost port.

Hyper miling (Hypermileing?) Is wringing every last possible efficiency point out of a ICE vehicle.

Typically via duct tape and hack job diy aero.

Some 80's CRX supposedly averaged 85mpg per tank with a kit like this.

A vacuum gauge was used as an old school indicator of expected fuel mileage. They had different zones shown on the gauge in green, yellow and red with green being a higher vacuum and red being lower. If you are lugging an engine and continuing to depress the accelerator further, your indicated vacuum will continue to drop and with it, your fuel economy. Another aspect of hyper mileing (sp?), other than aero improvements, is to use the vacuum gauge to help you modulate your throttle as you accelerate. At $9 a gallon, I'll play around with it ;-)

Vaccum gauge is a quite useful as a diagnostic tool as well.

Monitoring one while driving is interesting. Sometimes just s slight change in throttle application (your foot) will increase vaccum yet retain MPH.

    BTW, 0 vaccum = WOT

I feel like an scan gauge or ultra gauge would be more beneficial for monitoring mpg’s on the fly as well as other useful readouts.

When I imagine this green/yellow/red vacuum gauge I’m picturing the “fuelly” gauge in uhauls.

FWIW the 2nd gen Tacoma uses throttle by wire the TB butterfly kinda only sees driver pedal input as a suggestion and will open only as much as the computer tells it to in conjunction with AFR wide band and MAF readings unlike older true cable actuated TB's.

    What's this mean?

Well, like you I want to see my manifold vacuum to monitor efficiency but I do so via a OBDII dongle and an old phone using the Torque Pro app, with that said, there's little we can do with said information beyond continuing well known efficiency driving habits as we don't have direct modulation power over the TB.

Beyond that, ram air is real, I have a snorkel and a custom significantly more free flowing intake with some other goodies and if I do a 3rd gear WOT pull to get up to speed and then skip 4th and 5th right to 6th for cruising I can see exactly when that TB slams shut as my manifold "vacuum" jumps to nearly +2psi.

Beyond that my MPG is higher and my intake vacuum is lower on average after snorkel install so that definitely screws further with true vacuum readings to monitor efficiency.

    As always;

    YMMV.

My best guess to get vacuum for a guage would be to work in a T fitting to this line just behind the TB:

Precisely, the "U-Haul gauge" seems to be exactly what OP is after.

The one time I drive a U-Haul with one I liked to stomp up and down on the pedal to see how wildly I could get the needle to swing, good times.

Great info, thanks! I didn't know the throttle 'suggests' to the throttle body. I was under the impression it was servo taking direct orders from a rheostat. (Don't know if I got the terminology correct) I'll have to give this some more thought. In the meantime, I'll try not to hold up traffic ( ;-) )too much and save some money. Cheers, Dave

Probably easier to just plug in a scan tool and watch calculated load and fuel trims
