I may be crazy, but I'm considering getting a 2nd gen access cab or double cab long bed and putting my short bed Drifter on it... Put a plate on top of the front of the bed to close it in and then put some storage on top of it...

Theres a big grommet in the middle rear bottom of the double cab. Thats where my wires run from the main battery and from the aux batteries to the camper. Could have been put in by a previous owner, but appears to be pretty stock looking.
Might be worth looking into. It’s big enough to run at least the 4 big cables i have going through it

    Yeah that’s a Drifter.

So again, can a Nomad fit on a 2005 Tundra?

Wouldn't that be the "1st Gen Tundra" Nomad version that @tyfoon11 mentioned? "1st gen Tundra Drifter is same at top - about 54" but 6 inches wider at base = same bed size but more pronounced slope from bedrail up to the top"

Or are you asking if the later generation-intended Nomads will fit on the 1st Gen Tundra? That, I have no idea.

The post from @tyfoon11 i quoted above is in response to @BuzzardsGottaEat asking about getting a Nomad for his first gen tundra.
According to jay, it would appear that the full size Nomad is available as an option for the first gen tundras.

edit- had i not gotten my hands on a long bed tacoma and had i known this was potentially an option, i would have definitely gone that route with a first gen tundra. For sure.

I don't know, mang... that sounds a little crazy to me. But I'm all about new and creative ideas, maybe it would be rad! Only one way to find out. If you hate it, you can move over to a long-bed Drifter.

Yes I am asking if the Nomad that is made for the current Tundra can fit on a 2005 Tundra.

I think it would be a "temporary" solution to hold out until someone either wanted to trade their LB Drifter for a SB, or I put in an order for a new one and waited until it was ready. Or @socalexpeditions decided to sell his truck separate from the LB drifter…

No, the current nomad that they have on their website is not a direct fir for an 05.

I have a direct communication from Vagabond saying they can make the Nomad for the 2005 Tundra but it’d be about 3” shorter in height to compensate for the smaller truck.
But that’d be a specific order for a first gen made to fit.

That said, if the current one is only 3” taller and the bed dimensions are the same I don’t see why it wouldn’t work other than sticking up 3 extra inches above your cab...?

Also, DC Tundra or AC Tundra? They’re entirely different body and bed dimensions, so that’d make a big difference in finding your answer.

Negative here haha. I’m still figuring things out, some of the money is for a condo to rent out. We’ll see!

You’ll have to get exact specs from Vaga but iirc the bed of the AC is 3” less deep than the DC but the cab is also 3” shorter, so the height of the topper shouldn’t change to clear the cab.

The AC is like 0.4” longer bed internal and maybe 1” longer bed external or so but I’m sure the Vaga guys accounted for that.

Don’t know 07+ bed or cab dimensions because I have no interest in them but a little googling should let you know if they’re the same as your 05 AC or not. Good luck!

OK, now that I've placed my Nomad order (sorry to poison TW with a 1st Gen Tundra), I'm starting to plan out the next 12 months of my build. Between now and whenever my Nomad is done, I'd like to at least sort out electrical for the bed. In addition to running a fridge, USB, inverter, I'm also a ham radio operator. I'll probably be setting up a 500W HF station at some point. I also am a remote software dev so I'd like to be able to work from the rig from time to time. I'll likely do solar.

So, my question is, second battery under the hood or in the truck bed?

Since you will have ample bed space, it would be fine in the bed, but if you got the under hood space for the capacity you need, I think that is a better location. I’m not as familiar w/ the Tundra engine bay though. It can be hard to find a sturdy safe place under the hood for the larger 100ah or bigger type batteries that most need to power their set up.
