I have a quick question, I'm super interested in buying my dads Tacoma from him but struggling on what he could realistically get for it if he went to sell it along with how much I should tell him I would give him. I don't want him to be out a lot of money by selling it to me and while I can't totally "afford" it I've suddenly realized that it has a lot of sentimental value to me and I want it. Here are the specs on the truck. He did get it while I was big into my Land Cruisers and had 40s and 80s as well as a 100 at the time so he bought with my advice in mind thankfully.

2005 TRD Crew Cab with 141,000 miles
    Rear Locker
    Tow Package
    ARB Front bumper

He's been good about servicing it the only thing I think he's done wrong there is Royal Purple in the rear end but some might debate that. Otherwise it's been maintained mechanically.

Issues are, body has some little dings, clear coat on flares is flaking off, paint is scratched, faded and has never been waxed. He's rough on interiors so it's stained with coffee and who knows what, hasn't been cleaned in 5 or so years and there's a fair sized hole in the drivers seat. It had a ding in the front and was repaired but not perfectly so you can see a little orange peal on a fender and the aftermarket headlight isn't holding up well. The horn doesn't work (my dad wired up a horn under the hood and screwed a goofy button to the dash, totally his mo) but the cruise does, AC has a leak that needs addressing as well. I think that's about all that I can think of.

I want him to come out alright but I know these hold their value well so they may not be the best purchase for me (I was more in the market for a Sequoia). What do you think he would realistically get for it listing it on Craigslist? How about if he spent $500 on it and got it all detailed and addressed the issues?

Thanks in advance for the help and input.

It's got a pretty huge range from $8,500 as a dealer trade in on up but I'm looking for more real world and tangible information than KBB as I've found it to be very off on cars that have a niche appeal or limited sales data as well as local markets and such.

I am pretty sure you are looking at about 10k to 11k if areas are addressed.

8900 to 9500 is what I would say realistically. Does it have full insurance on it?

I agree. I never found KBB to be that accurate. I use it at a reference, but lean more towards NADA.
I also use the Texas standard presumptive value calculator http://www.txdmv.gov/standard-presumptive-calculator which DMV uses to determine the minimum value for taxes. Enter you VIN and it will give you a value. Cannot say with certainly, but I think it is based on the commercial version of NADA.

    It does yes.

I must say I like the TX DMV site however, it does seem to be spot on with some and dead wrong with others. I certainly wouldn't offer nor would I blindly accept what that site says and it also doesn't seem to adjust at all for mileage. I entered three of my cars in it, one was too high, one too low and the other seemed spot on maybe a touch low if you factor in lower miles. I also checked it with some ended eBay listings with the same results, some auctions finished for more than double what the site said and some finished for nearly half.

Thanks for the info though they are additional resources that may come in handy.

I sold my 2007 SR5 4x4 DCLB, ARB bumper , with 175k on it. I got 10 thousand but it was in very rough shape with lots of dents and scratches on every body panel. I am in california so that may have influenced the price a bit. If the truck in question was well maintained and in good shape, and it sounds like it was, I think around 11 to 12k would be a good deal for you. If his alternative is to trade it then he stands to make an extra few thousand by selling to you, and if he plans to sell privately he can skip the hassle and maybe get a thou or two less by selling to you.

Be careful buying from relatives. If anything goes wrong, you will hold resentment towards them.

He's not really a relative, he's my pops, we don't work like that. The way I figure it, anybody I'm willing to give a kidney to (it's a short list) and vice versa isn't going to feel resentment over a blown motor or ten. It's a used ride, comes with the same promises from my dad as it would a dealer or random guy on Craigs. I get what you're saying though and I'm sure for many this would apply.

Always better buying a truck you know the history on... That is a huge advantage in my book

Kbb and Nada both estimate around 10k for the condition you described. I've seen these trucks sell for about that around here on Craigslist in much worse shape.

Thanks to all for the input and responses, I'm figuring he would get about $10,500 for it if he stuck $500 into it. I think he's thinking he may get closer to $13,000 but I don't think he would though I could be wrong. The one thing that keeps popping into mind is to offer him $8,500 like it is which I think would be fair to me and fair to him for a quick and easy deal.

The A/C leak is a $1000 job - I think a fair dad to son deal is exactly as you suggest - 8500 as is.

And as the son of a 5 years gone dad and the dad of a 16 year old son - enjoy treasure and respect the time you have with him - the price of the truck is secondary to all that as I am sure you know.

I've been cleaning the hell out of it but will get one once the seats are back in and I wash it. I did remember today that it's a 2006 not a 2005.

I can do the AC myself, replace hose, replace valvues while I'm at it, replace condenser, vacuum down, and recharge. It will cost me some money but I don't think $1,000 doing it myself, AC service is rather cheap in Arizona, there's a lot of competition here after all.

Yeah, that's where I'm struggling, my dad is an amazing guy and I too have a 16 year old son. The truck has a lot of memories and meaning for me so while I can't afford it I really want to make the deal happen for myself and my son. I'm always rather broke so while the money isn't something I'm focused on or care about I need to have enough to buy the truck and survive you know. Hence me struggling to find a price that is fair to him while not killing me. He already said I could have it for $10k but that was an off the cuff comment and I think he would do $9,000 so I guess I will see what I can work out with him. Thanks for the comment, I couldn't agree more and that's my exact motivation.

If you're looking for a place; AZ Auto and Refrigeration on the Southwest corner of Swan and Broadway have never done me wrong and the price is good IMO. Assuming you live in Tucson lol.
