Valve adjustment 2007 Tacoma

    Anybody know what the recommended mileage is on the 4.0 L engine to adjust the valves? Anybody done that? How difficult is it?

    I just adjusted the valves on my Honda odyssey and it was a PITA!. Of course it is a front wheel drive with the engine mounted in sideways.

    It definitely added some power and fuel economy to my van howbeit it was way overdue for the valve adjustment at 265,000.

    Thanks for the post. Apparently after reading that pdf it looks like this motor doesn't have adjustable valves. You have to replace lifter size

    Valves are adjustable via shims (like most overhead cam motors). Unless you have low compression / weird running issues you likely wont need to adjust valves ever on the life of the motor unless you BEAT on it.

    well that's good news. As mentioned adjusting valves on my odyssey van was a royal PITA. But on that vehicle the exhaust valves would tighten with age and burn if not adjusted. Had to break out the old feeler gauges for that job.
    Am I mistaken or do hydraulic lifters self adjust?

    AFAIK the 1gr does not have hydraulic lifters / hydraulic finger followers etc. Its ye ole shim and bucket on top of the valves that the cam rides on.

    The 1GR-FE (V6) doesn't have Hydraulic Lifters.

    The 2TR-FE (I4) does have Hydraulic Lifters

    I don't see a shim and bucket here. Looks like you replace the lifters to spec after measuring. What am I missing?

    Same question I was thinking? I havent actually been into this 4.0L like I was on my 1996 3.4L. I had alot of practical working experience on the 3.4.

    I never checked the valves on my 3.4L. I heard stories those valves moved, but it was my understanding that by the time you wracked up enough miles for that to be a concern, you had bigger problems. It's my understanding the 4.0L is the same; I've never heard anyone have topend problems due to valve clearance without needing to address other issues first.

    Kind of a pain because you cant just get a shim kit, but i see why toyota did it, less parts to be clacking around and less probability of dropping a shim down in the motor.
