Hey!!! Don’t spend money on shims!!! I just made an account right now to let everyone know that if your shims are too high, you can sand them down to required specs for your vehicle!! I did this today and it worked !!! * Caution* only sand the bottom part of the shims, not the top where the cam lobes touch.

** Today I found out that if your shims are too high, you can sand them down to specs and not have to spend money on new ones !

How do you sand them...belt sander? Lol. Or a precision surface grinder?

I had one exhaust valve that was .009 , just getting it to .010 using wet and dry sand paper ( on a perfectly flat surface like plate glass ) took a lot of time and tired fingers.
..........I wouldn’t want to have to do a lot of them that way.

yea. What if you needed to take off much more?

Don't get me wrong, this is an option but I've seen on tiny button shims if they get uneven, they get spit out at higher rpm's.

I'd just stick to changing them if possible.

I’m curious to know if you can notice a difference in how it runs... The tools just showed up, I’m doing mine Thursday

You doing a 4 cyl or 6? If I have to do my 4 cyl, I'm gonna pull the exhaust cam. So much easier and gives you extra room to do the intake side with tools. Just don't forget the service bolt in the split gear, and to tighten the cam bolts back down in stages.

Edit: I guess 4 or 6 doesent make a difference, you'll just have 2 cams to pull on a 6 cyl.

In Timmy I trust. I’m not removing the cam. You shouldn’t either. Good luck.

There are specialty fixtures available expressly designed to hold valve shims on a surface grinder. Better automotive machine shops do this all the time.
That being said I just buy the correct ones. There are also "28mm" shims available in the aftermarket.

    Tools of the trade.
I have never had any trouble using the Toyota recommended tools on the V6.
A blast of compressed air in the bucket notch will "lift" the shim free from the oily bucket and the rare earth "magnet on a stick" retrieves them with no embarrassment.

Why not? Makes it much easier if you have to adjust 6 of your exhaust valves. IDK of you've ever tried getting to the cyl #4 shims either but its a pain in the arse.

    Yes, manual everything...even mirrors...
agreed, super easy if align TDC, service bolt for split gear, mark FRONT of sprockets together (makes it easier aligning putting back with intake cam). 10x easier. Followed by FSM procedure for removing bearing cap bolts uniformly. First time doing it was easy

Just have to keep shit clean and organized!

Shims pop out like butter using a pick tool to hold bucket in place and magnet lifts it up instantly for ya
