I'm looking for a write up for the valve cover gasket replacement for the 4.0 v6. I have found everything but the v6 one.

Also looking for recommendations on what else to replace while I'm in there besides the plugs.

    Thanks for any help.

Did this last weekend. I am by no means a pro, more of a weekend warrior.

I like to do all my own work, but since moving cities (and living in an apartment), hadn't done any work on the truck. I did this job in the parking garage - thankfully no complaints from strata!

Honestly, I used a 2.7L write up on here as a guide combined with my Haynes manual and everything went smoothly. I bought oem valve cover gaskets and the plenum gasket from Toyota. I also got some 'permatex the right stuff'. The gaskets cost me about $110 CAD from the dealer (so likely cheaper for you). The permatex is a diy gasket maker that goes on with a caulking gun.

The only issue I ran into was the Allen wrench bolts on the intake and a 10mm nut holding the bracket to some hoses/electrical wiring up by the windshield that was hard to get to. My ratchet set didn't have a metric allen that fit, but I had a loose imperial set that worked well with a combo wrench used for extra leverage. I think it's 9mm if I remember correctly?. Patience and a small step ladder was important :) I also used an old beach towel draped over the painted parts of the truck, so I didn't scratch up the paint with my belt buckle or something.

I immediately put a clean rag over the intake plenum to prevent dropping dirt into it when I exposed it, and did a bit of a wash of the electrical harness and valve covers before removing them. I worked on one side at a time, doing the passenger side (easier) first, to also prevent me from dropping crud in anything.

I gently cleaned the flat surface with a clean rag, and the channels in the cover with a pick, applied a thin bead of permetex, then seated the valve cover gasket. I also put a small bead on the flat surface and a little where the valve cover and timing chain cover meet, as it's a bit of a weak spot.

I used a ratchet strap to tie the wiring harness up to the hood on the driver's side to help with putting the driver's side valve cover back on. I tightened the bolts by hand, then went around doing them all to 50 inch pounds, then increased to 80 inch pounds. The interior bolts are 84 inch pounds, and the perimeter bolts 80 inch pounds according to the Hayne's manual. I have read some places on here that they are torqued to 17 foot pounds, but this seems very high. Maybe someone with more experience can confirm this.

I was quoted 2.1 hours to do both sides, but including setup and cleanup (and ripping apart my closet for my Allen keys) it took me nearly 6 hours. I turned a 2 beer job into a 6 beer job as my friend put it ;) but the cover sealed perfectly with the permatex acting as a sort of second line of defense. For anyone wondering, I used the added permatex as I replaced this gasket in late 2013 when I did my head gasket, and I don't want to do it again and have had great results with using it for other low pressure applications.

    Good luck, and have fun!

I have Taco 05 V6 4.0 with 328K on it and it is showing oil leak on the valve cover passenger side. I'm planning to work on it but still looking for a step by step procedure how to tackle it. Hoping anyone can help here. Thanks

For those seeking FSM for '05 - '06 - here ya go. Scroll down to 2005-2006 Tacoma - click on Full FSM File Download 203MB - Online Version does not work. Download to your HD and never worry again about a web site being down. It might take a bit for the web site to initialize. Most of the mechanical things from '05-'15 are covered in this '05-'06 FSM. Secondary Air System added in 2012 not in '05-'06 FSM. You can get that at Toyota techinfo site for $20(2 day subscription).

Further down in this archive site, there is a wiring diagram for an '07 Tacoma

lol So I got everything finished. Had one small thing come up. I don’t know what this thing is but it was PITA... but we’re good to go now. For anyone with the same set up.. there are two nuts on the top and a 12mm bold on the bottom side. There is also 2 10mm nuts on the firewall side pipe and 2 10mm bolts on the passenger facing side.

If you look at the valve cover pic you can see where it was leaking. Also the gasket was sort of cracked and torn or something.

while I was in there I changed my plugs also. They were rough. I’ve got 113k on the odo.

How hard was this on a scale from 1 to 10. I need this done on my 08 and I'm tempted to do it myself but I'm kind of afraid of fighting that electrical harness in the way. Should I take it to a shop?

I would say like maybe 4-5 and not because it’s technical it’s just sort of time consuming especially with a wide and kid interrupting every 30 mins. The wiring harness was moved out of the way by using some string and just tying it up to the hood. It kept it out of the way no problem. If your reasonably mechanically inclined I’d say give’er a rip

What replacement gasket did you use? Looks like the original was black, but you have a blue one.

I'm pretty sure it was a Felpro. It was the most expensive one they carried at Autozone.

Don’t forget to apply some RTV to the Spots where the head, timing, and valve cover meet.
Other than that, looks like you are doing a fine job.
