    Hey Y'all,
I need to replace the gaskets on my valve covers cuz I'm getting some oil leakage, and I was wondering what else would be a good idea to address/look for while I'm at it. 2002 3.4L 4x4. I'm not very experienced at wrenching. I can do regular maintenance like brakes, oil changes, plugs, airflow stuff. My most ambitious project to date has been replacing my clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder, so for me the valve cover gasket is pretty new territory. Is there something I'd be dumb not to do while I have those off? Thanks in advance for any help.

Tube seals 1000% and reseal or replace the half moons in the cylinder head when its exposed.

    Spark plugs

Check ignition coil boots and wires closely for cracks or arcing

If the heater hoses are questionable they're easy to access with the upper intake removed

Here is the list of parts I replaced at the same time I replaced my valve covers. It's not a terribly difficult job, but I'd reccomend taking your time and following a tutorial video from YouTube. Have everything prepared ahead of time.

    Toyota part # Name/Quantity
11213-62020 Engine Valve Cover Gasket- 2
11193-70010 Spark Plug Tube Seal- 6
90210-05007 Engine Valve Cover washer- 16
    11188-62010 Engine Camshaft Seal/plug- 2
    17176-62040 Intake Manifold Gasket- 2
    90480-18001 PCV Valve Grommet- 1
    12204-62010 PCV Valve- 1
    11183-62010 Camshaft Plug (half-moons)- 4
00295-00103 Oil Pan Sealer (FIPG)- 1

I'm adding the knock sensor cable to my valve cover job. I've read several posts here on TW to check your Valve shims to see if there in spec, and others have stated to send your fuel injectors off to Motor West for a rebuild while you doing this job. Just how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go.

Clean the throttle body. Make sure to get the metal gasket for it as well.

The wire harness; the loom on it will break and crumble and leave a bit of a mess so make sure you've got the shop vac ready. All the plastic you'll find there is brittle as hell.

Use some heat-resistant wire wrap/tape to tidy things up as you put it back together.

A lot of people focus on gaskets, etc. to replace in there but find out about the wire harness the hard way.

Also want to think about fipg/RTV. If you are ok letting it sit for a few hours to overnight, then Toyota FIPG or Ultra Grey is good. If you will need to immediately start the truck after repair, then I'd recommend right stuff black.

I'd highly suggest watching this video before you decide what to do "while you're in there":

And ultimately everything he does, you should do, unless you have any maintenance records indicating that maintenance item has been done recently.

Do you have a part number for the knock sensor cable, I couldn't find anything. Thanks

Do you have to replace the harness or just wrap it in the tape/wire rap? Thanks.

the part number I ordered was 82219-34010, but use your VIN number to be sure. To answer your other question for KwikVette, I'm using some Telsa Tape I ordered from Amazon to wrap the wire harness up in. I ordered all my parts from Ourisma Toyota, which was previously known as McGeorge Toyota.
