Hey I need help from the yota nation. I was driving my 96 Tacoma v6 3.4 in 4th gear doing about 50 when all of a sudden it started to make a weird noise kind of like a old 95 Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel.... The ones that sound like time bombs. I pulled over poped the hood to notice that oil is coming out of my valve cover as well as some oil. Any ideas as to what happened

Well you need a new valve cover gasket for one.

Where was it coming out from exactly? Its possible there is an obstruction in the PCV or exhaust that is holding excessive pressure in the crankcase. Or it could just be that your old gasket was shot.

Head gasket or valve cover gasket , clean the area off really good and make sure you have oil in your engine and run it and look to see where it's leaking from

It's deffinatley coming from the valve cover and I know this year and model has a problem with the valve cover bolts loosening up but they were tight. Some oil is coming from this electronic thing on top I the valve cover that looks like it mounts into the valve cover sorry I'm new to the Tacoma and I'm also 17 I do know a bit about car but not everything. Smoke also comes out of the valve cover. It's coming out between the gasket. I know I need a new gasket but I find it hard to Believe the gasket would just blow like that.

If you're 17 why are you saying you're in law enforcement?

You selected Law Enforcement under your personal detail settings, and it shows a badge under your name on your posts reflecting your service.

So.. maybe @sean266 can fix that.

    Whole lotta stuff
Your number one reason for a valve cover gasket failure is that the truck is almost 20 years old. Depending on if the engine and gasket are both orginal or not, they both could have seen better times. Also if oil is coming out from under one of the sparkplug coil packs, it is either loose or you have over-pressurization.

Hey man, glad you found the problem! Now, I'd recommend fixing your profile to reflect the non LEO status. It's kinda taken seriously round here.

our 3.4s don't have rods.... (assuming you meant push rods and not connecting rods since if a connecting rod blew out your valve cover, it would make a hole in your hood as well)

do any of our tacoma engines have push rods? 2.4 and 2.7 are chain driven with DOHC, right?

I usually try to do what I can on my own. I have the repair manual and i am good with small engines just not trucks. I don't have much money as I am only 17 so I avoid mechanics, but if I don't feel confident then I will take it to a mechanic
