Need advise. I have a 04 tacoma with 2.7 liter.250,000 miles. It’s running fine, but I took it in for a pre sale inspection and it turned out to have valve leakage, according to a cylinder leakage test. The test showed #1 -20%,#2 -32%, #3 -20%, and #4 -12%. Leaking pass the exhaust valves. My question is, would a valve job be a temporary fix, or should I just replace the whole engine. It’s a very straight , well kept truck, nothing fancy, has hand roll up windows and key to unlock doors. Just a great pickup. Meets all my needs. I don’t have a ton of money, but I know that these trucks are keepers. What do you guys think?

You might get away with just adjusting the valves, but you may also have to get the cylinder head resurfaced at a machine shop if the valves are burnt. I wouldn't look for a used engine at this point: for all you know, it could end up having the same issue.

I just went through pulling the cylinder head off my sons 96 2.7 and got it back together a few days ago. In my case, it blew a head gasket and turned out the head was cracked....so i had to get a new cyl head. IMHO - If all you need is a valve job, I'd pull the head.....take it to a machine shop, let them do their thing.....slap it back on. I'll bet you'd be done for less than $700. You'd have all new gaskets, and basically a new truck. The FSM is easy to follow, just take your time.

Thanks for the replies. There is no fluid leaks, and the truck runs great no engine noise , or issues that i can see, but with 250,000 miles there is bound to be some wear and tear.
