I'm starting to hear a faint and random ticking from my valve train (99 2.4L 5-lug) and it bothers me. This is my daily and I drive it like I stole it most of the time. Problem is, I don't have the time to pop the cover off, see what shims are there, go get new/used ones and get back to put it all back together. Bone stock motor, any idea what sizes I need to be looking for?

You need to open it first and measure the valve lash before you will even begin to know which shims you need.

As said, there are like 18 possible options, and you can end up swapping some around to save having to buy all new ones. They are $10 each from Toyota. Save the un used ones as they can be used in the future.

Toyota doesn’t stock all the shims either, so plan on it being a 2-3 day project.

There is a complete kit to buy from somewhere. Just google the OD size, it'll come up. I have one sitting in front of me but caliper is in garage. HotCams maybe?

I have 20 or so from a Coralla. If we can get a box together from cores, they *factory* are in .001 increments vs. .005s avail. now.
