Is it okay to use an alternative coolant instead of what they provide? Is there any risks? I'm asking because I saw a valvoline one at the store today marketed for Toyota Lexus Scion etc. Any insight is much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Should be fine. Looks like it is HOAT. Is it pink or red?

I didnt open it I just saw it and was curious about it since I'm due for a drain and fill on the radiator and it seems to be cheaper than the dealers stuff. I'll take a look next time I'm there. Also what is HOAT?

I've been doing drain and refills with that Valvoline stuff from Walmart for years.

If you type valvoline coolant or simply coolant in the search box, you will find dozens of threads on this.

Hybrid Organic Acid Technology. It is what Toyota specs for their coolant.

All my Toyota products, except the new RX350, have walmart’s Supertech. Its a universal coolant engineered to be compatible will all makes and colored coolants. It is advisable to flush out the OEM coolant to avoid any possible compatibility issues with different coolant compositions. Drain the radiator and engine block; refill with distilled water; run engine; drain again; refill with 5qts concentrated antifreeze; top off with distilled water.

OEM Pink is another one that's ok. Its $30 for 1 gallon undiluted from Amazon. I used it in the Rav4 V6, and is what I'm going to use in the Tacoma.

Another option is some NAPAs sell Aisin Super Coolant which is the same as Toyota's Super coolant - believe this was $20-$25 for a 50/50 gallon.

As a counterpoint, I will point out the all-purpose Super Tech coolant in all my Toyota/Lexus products, except the new RX350, is doing well. As preventive maintenance I have replaced the water pumps, radiator caps, and Thermostats in the Camry and the ES350, each with over 200K. The Lexus water pump had some play in the shaft bearing - nothing out of the ordinary for a water pump with over 200K. From as far as I can I could see into the water galleries, all looked clear and normal. None of the cars have had any coolant issues. Bottom line, no need to buy expensive Toyota or Toyota-only coolants. The Sienna has also had the water pump replaced with no issues. But, I haven't checked with my brother who also helps me maintain it to see if he has ever replaced the coolant with Toyota-only coolant. I maintained it exclusively through about 175K and only used Super Tech coolant with no issues.
