Hello Folks! Just wanted to post about the Valvoline Retore and Protect. About three years ago I bought my son a used 2008 Tacoma standard transmission base model with around 90,000 miles on it. It had great service records. Very regular oil changes with quality oil. After purchasing, I put Mobile 1 in it, which is what I have been using in all my cars for years. We always do our own oil changes at home at 5,000 miles. I decided to try the the Restore and Protect on my son's truck 5,000 miles ago.

We changed the oil yesterday and it was much blacker than normal. Generally, the oil still has a brownish tint to it even after the 5,000 miles. This time it was pitch black. The truck doesn't use any at all, and runs perfectly. My guess is that the oil must be cleaning something!!

My whole point of the post is to see if anyone else has been using this oil, and experienced the same thing. I have watched all the videos and read all the forums, but since I trust this forum the most, I wanted to see what you all have experienced with this oil. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Did it smell bad, like mixed with gas? You can always go the blackstone analysis. Any other symptom (change in mpgs, rough idle). I’m less worried about the oil (as long as using OEM specs).

The oil did not smell bad at all, just much darker than usual, and no noticeable changes in mpg or idle. Everything seems the same and I am someone who is really picky about cars so I would notice something, if there had been a change. Like I said, the truck was well maintained so I was not expecting to see any difference at all. Maybe the internals are dirtier than I thought. I am definitely going to keep using it though!

I recently did some digging on this oil as well, and sounds like it does what it’s advertised to do.

I have always used Mobil 1 5w-30 in my Tacoma, and the last 30k miles on the 4Runner, as well as my girlfriends mini for the last 30k too. All vehicles get 5K oil changes.
Switched over the vehicles from regular synthetic to high mileage once they hit 100k.

What prompted me to look into Valvoline‘s or store and protect is that my girlfriend‘s mini burns about 1 quart of oil every 1800 miles. I’m hoping that over the next few thousand miles, that will get better, hopefully less than a quart in between oil changes.

The 4Runner is a 1997 and has over 330,000 miles on it — mostly good maintenance but some questionable oil change intervals over the last 100 K or so from another owner… it doesn’t burn too much, and the top end looked pretty clean when I took the valve covers off.
this last oil change over the weekend I switched both the mini and the 4Runner to Valvoline stuff.

I saved the filters and cut them open to get a baseline for contaminants.
I plan to change filters on both vehicles at around the 2500 mile mark just to get an idea of how it’s going.

TLDR; I just swapped over two vehicles from mobile one high mileage to Valvoline restoring protect, will update in a few thousand miles!

My daughter's 2014 Corolla started using a little oil a few months back. I was having to add about a half a quart every 1,500 miles or so. It has 237,000 miles on it and runs really well.
I pulled the plugs and did the Berryman's soak on it overnight, then changed the oil to Valvoline R&P. It's got about 2,500 miles on the oil change now and hasn't dropped noticeably on the dipstick. I check it weekly.
From the videos I've seen on it, it seems to have some credibility.
    Keep us posted!

i thought about the Berryman soak too on the mini.
How did you extract the fluid after a soak?

Just leave the spark plugs out and crank the engine over. It'll come squirting out pretty fast.
Be warned, it takes a LOT of cranking once you reassemble everything to finally get it to fire up, so have a battery charger ready.
It's likely that some of the Berryman's will get into the engine oil so I let it run for about 10 minute with no load before I changed the oil.

I’d think so lol, I’ll have some tags covering the plugs so not to get it on the paint.

Yeah I tried it. $30. Heard it’s good.
I change the oil. Then I drive. Then I change the oil again and drive.
