Here is your daily oil thread! :)

I know what you're thinking, don't pay someone to change your oil for you. Just do it yourself
But groupons gotta deal and I want it.

So I called up Valvo and told the guy I need 0W-20. He said that only comes in full and synthetic blends, but for my 2017 TRD OR it will only take the Full Synthetic... and that I'd be looking at 100+ (round 45$ with groupon)

I know a lot of you guys will only use Full Synthetic (and for good reason), but him telling me I cant even consider using Conventional or even Synt Blend has to be BS right?

If you can find a 0W-20 that meets Toyota's specification while also being conventional, I'll be impressed.

You're going to be hard pressed to find any newer motor that doesn't come with at least a syn blend from the factory.

Just buy some bulk OEM filters and some Mobil 1 Full synthetic Extended Performance. You'll be right around 50 bucks after you figure the individual cost of the filters.

If you're balking at the cost of the synthetic, it helps to remember that you only need to change it every 10,000 miles (officially) or 12-15k (unofficially). So for most folks that's like one oil change a year. It's really pretty cheap.

Why is an oil change $100? Heck, even my dealership is about $50. Don't believe those slash value prices.

Tacomas take more than a car (obviously) which is what those deals are based on. Getting charged more just comes with the nature of a truck, but no time ever should it be over $65 at most.

Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
These Tacoma engines are of today’s age. They are more refined, and if you want to get the performance, longevity, and sleep well at night, I’d do what the manual says. I mean they don’t put that sticker under the hood for no reason, they mean it or else they wouldn’t even take time and $ to print and stick them on during manufacturing.

When I purchased any vehicle in the past and it could run conventional, my first and subsequent oil changes always go full synthetic. The number one thing you don’t cut corners on is oil out of all your other maintenance needs!

I use Walmarts super tech full synthetic. $15 for a 5 gallon jug. Read the tests on it. Pretty good stuff. Your not paying for the name.

You can do that if you want to spend extra money, but it's certainly not required. Toyota says every 10k.

DIY oil change isnt exactly a cost savings, at least not where I live. It is a time saver at most. No waiting in line, driving anywhere, etc. Consider the upfront cost of all the tools, and then where you will dispose the dirty oil. In my area it costs money to dispose of oil, most of the time. There are periods of "free haz mat" dumping, but that is not very often.

I get mine every 5k because that's how I am, but when I do, the people at the dealership try to convince me I don't need it and they give me a funny look like...o_O

If you don't want to do it yourself, at least use something other than a quack lube franchise. Find a good independent shop that will service other things for you when needed.

No, becuase they feel compelled to follow the manuf. specs. Because lawsuits and such.

However, if you do change it yourself, you can run anything you wish. If the motor fails and they do a lab analysis on the oil and find it an under performer, they may pass it off on you, but what are the odds of that?
