I recommend a dash cam with parking mode. Just installed my Thinkware F770 last weekend, works perfectly.

Hanging a dash cam in SF is a good way to throw a c-note out your window. Car break ins are an epidemic across the city. I was broken into 3 times over 15 yrs.

Home security is simple. One just needs to understand that you cannot stop anyone who really wants to break into your house. But as long as your neighbors' houses are easier looking targets you lower your chances of getting burglarized.

If you shoot someone in California, it very likely will cost you a lot more than your grill.

Sorry about your loss, but another vote for the Nest Outdoor Camera. We started with a DropCam indoor camera in the house and as soon as Nest released the Outdoor camera we bought one. Now I'm looking to pick up a second.

You might not call it an epidemic, but the homeless urinate and defecate all over Austin. Some times they're not homeless, just drunken hipsters but they look the same.

Aiming the lights is the only thing I might have them do unless somebody has any tips on how to do that right at home

Smitty indicated cameras don't help. I have a friend that had some stuff stolen from the front porch. The video was instrumental in catching the wacko.

Took me 30 minutes to setup a three camera system. All wireless. Easy peasy. http://arlo.com/en-us/products/arlo-pro/default.aspx

We do have a homeless problem and yes you gotta watch your step so you don't walk on poo,piss,neddles,etc... but I wouldn't call it cheap, unless you think that 1mil for a fixer upper or $4500 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment is cheap .

First, sorry to OP. That sux.
I've never noticed car alarms alerting anybody because they're so frequently false alarms people have just tuned them out. Unless the local PD has pictures already, seems like a camera system would be useless.
Theft is painful for the victim, but low on police radar, it's just too hard to solve. I got robbed one time, the policeman was very sympathetic. But we both knew the stuff was gone for good. "Serial numbers?" he asked. "Yep, on some stuff." (They stole things like extension cords for the copper, pnuematic tools that were 15 years old, etc).
"Well, if they pawn it and the pawn shop reports it and there's a valid ID for the guy, we can get the items back."
I never heard anything about it after that. I had an alarm system put in, but that was for a house, not a vehicle.
Last, I lived about 60 miles north of SF for 30 years, and it was amazing how many times there was some guy peeing behind a tree in the park I used to walk my dogs. Police rousted campers in that same park. Homeless people lived in the bushes planted alongside the expressway.
OP, I hope you find a workable solution.

Yeah for every 100 camera systems installed by residents maybe 1 guy actually gets caught. It's a feel good thing and mostly a deterrent. Nice to hear your friend had it work in their favor.
